Are you happy with 384?

384 ADSL on verizon / unshaped account for 1 person alone is purrrrrrfect

depending on requirements...

but when u the line shared - eeek try for 4 meg and deploy bw/throttle
 
384K is OK...I download videos directly (FX plugins ftw) - no streaming. My real problem is CAP. Sure I'd enjoy 4Mb but with only 2GB it's quite useless and already very limiting on my 310Kbps dsl.

5.7km - the quality of the line must be whats holding you back because I'm over 6km and get decent speeds.
 
56kb/s -> 64kkb/s (Infosat) -> 64kb/s +- (Infosat with ISDN) -> 8mb/s (My Home UK ADSL) -> 24Mb/s (My Upgraded Home UK Line) -> 14.4kb/s (My Stuffed Up Telkom Line back in SA) -> 512kb/s (For 2 days now on ADSL)

I think it depends on what you will be doing with it. 512kb/s has a better upload speed, which will help if you playing games and uploading images to sites like facebook. But make sure you getting a cap to match your line speed otherwise it will be kinda pointless getting a faster line. Getting a 4mb/s line with a 3gig cap doesn't make much sense to me.

At the end of the day, no matter what line speed you get, you will always want that page to load faster or that download to finish quicker. It's finding the line between what we can get, and what we actually need.
 
I went from 56kb/s to 384kb/s recently.
I'm already getting frustrated with the long waiting periods when downloading large files.
I normally start the download before I leave for work and ,if lucky ,then it's finished when I get home.
Next step will have to be 4mb/s- if budget allows!
Depends on Telkom's plans ???

I wouldn't be surprised if the copper was oxidized into long lengths of greenies.

Are you also on HomeDSL384? - somehow I thought you might be using a faster line.

According to Telkodemonopolies, what are your options for upgrading to 512 considering the copper length from exchange?

384 kbps isn't very fast but I'm happy with it because I don't have to pay every time I connect like I did when I was using 56K and ISDN.
My biggest gripe is the pathetically low caps. They need to be improved to at least 10GB before Telkom bother about increasing the speeds.
When I was using ISDN I was downloading about 7GB per month (mainly GIS data) - I had to cut back on my downloading when I "upgraded" to ADSL. :(
 
Yea. also on 384... And I share it between 3 computers, so it terribly slow. Would really like faster speeds

Are you sure about that 6km+ copper length? - is there a white roadside distribution box nearby? - if there is, then it's more likely that the copper length is much shorter than you believe it is - fibre runs from them white d/bs back to the exchange, and copper from mini-DSLAM in the white d/bs to customer premises...

Nope - no boxes - which doesnt bode well for newer technologies (ADSL 2) being implemented any time soon :(

The distance is what they reported to me when they came in to install the line (back before the days of the self install). Of course they might have been mistaken but when they told me where the exchange I figured they couldnt be that far off.
 
Absolutely ridiculous how telkom is charging for line speed (all the same line dammit.) Then the absurdity of the cap (at more stupid money.)

Would 'upgrade' immediately to 4096. Recently discovered a serious need for more speed! Been 'happy' with my 384 though even this is seriously constrained: little video, parsimonious webpages (stop the full download of graphics etc., in the name of conserving cap.)

Telkoms little gulag. Really this ain't the internet: are they completely fu#king cracked charging the prices they do with the mindset to go with it.

(Oh yes and please let's not land any cables: I mean things could get cheaper. NAH.)

My calculations make my similar package @ 4096: R260 more. How do you manage R16? Shared line?

Will buy some unshaped: see if that makes a difference.

Telkom: in your tiny little mind you may not understand it but believe it; you are hurting and constraining the economy of the country and every single south african.

For the two and a half years I used my 384 I was perfectly content, I normally was first in the CSS server even with my "slower" line. now Im on uncapped 192, now THAT is slow...

There must be a Telkodemonopolies-branded distribution box somewhere, even if you live in a complex there will be a beastly d/b somewhere that feeds copper to the complex...
 
problem is every so often saix network goes craptacular on me and i am forced to use their proxy servers to load pages properly.[my main complaint, d/l's seem fine if it works]

We have the standard green one about a km up the road but thats not what you were referring to earlier on is it?
