Are you really a gamer if:

1) You think the XBox 360 is actually comparable to the PS2 and you never knew that the XBox 1 even existed! You think that MS is a new player to the gaming world.

2) Graphics is all that matters to you. Gameplay second.

3) You've never played or heard of: King's Quest, Heroes Quest, Space Quest, Police Quest, Jones in the Fast Lane or Colonel's Bequest (Sierra Classics).

4) You don't know what (or haven't played) Pac-man, Space Invaders, Pong or Tetris.

5) You played DOOM 3 or Quake 4 without playing DOOM I or II or Quake I to III.

6) You've never played on a ATARI/NES/MASTER SYSTEM/SNES/GENESIS/PS1 - you don't know what any of them are.

7) You think Tekken is the first fighting game and best fighting series ever.

8) You've never played Street Fighter of Mortal Kombat.

9) You've never played a strategy game older than Warcraft 3.

10) You've never played a Super Mario Bros. or Sonic The Hedgehog game.

11) Counter-Strike is the first and only FPS you've ever played.

12) Windows XP and the Playstation 2 is only gaming platforms you've ever played games on.

13) You think the PS2 is more powerful than the original XBox.

Unfortunately, I think a generation of gamers is being raised without appreciation of it's history and where it's come from. They take gaming for granted and want the latest and greatest with no appreciation for older games.

why would someone new to the whole gaming world really give a crap about the old stuff?

its not their fault they where not around

all they see is nice new graphics and amazing games

they could care less about old kuk

That's just the thing - they aren't kuk.

Just my point of new age gamers: No appreciation for the retro.

I have been playing games since I was in my mommies womb but I still agree with killadoob. Retro is not always better and you don't need to experience it to be classed as a real gamer.

My nephew hasn't got a clue what Quake I is but he kicks my @ss in Halo on the Xbox. Does that make him less of a gamer than me?

The gaming culture is grown in leaps and bounds over the past couple of years and it's a good thing (I thank all those young games), but I just think it's sad to see it going forward with people who don't have an understanding where it's come from....call me passionate.

Yes. :p

well games are not like history we dont need to know the history of quake 1 to enjoy quake 4

they both still games

personally i play only new games, i never play older games because they look old and the nature of the game play is old :)

Well i've been playing games since space invaders.
So i know and luv em all.
All consoles all handhelds all pc games.

Sorry, couldn't resist :D

1) LOL, you'd have to be an idiot to think that.

2) Gameplay first, atmosphere (this includes gfx/sfx/physics) come second.

3) Played bits of all of them except Colonel's Request

4) Played 'em all. Still an avid Tetris fan! but why was Sopwith not mentioned? :P

5) LOL I clocked Doom 1&2 on hard difficuilty while I was waiting for my pre-order of Doom 3 :D .. and Doom 3's gameplay was boring in comparison.

6) Fiddled with BASIC on my friend's C64 when I was a kid; Have the blisters from playing too much NES, loved my friends Sega Megadrive.. what? No BBC Micro???

7) MK1 was my first fighter love-game. Prisoner of War and various older arcade games were fun. I recently played Double Dragon again on MAME32, goodness :D

8) Finished MK1 again recently.

9) Warlords (1993 or so?) but my first RTS love affair was Dune 2, was the best. Then C&C, then I sorta lost interest in RTS completely.

10) *hums both theme tunes*

11) Catacomb Abyss episodes 1-3, predates Wolfenstein 3D! EGA 16 colour FTW!

12) LOL, riiight, as if.

13) See above.

Perhaps not, but chances are, if you thought Quake 4 was kuk, you will think that the whole Quake series is kuk. And compared to Quake I to III, Quake 4 was pretty kuk. I to III were absolute gems.

I don't think it's about being passionate.

You are sounding like a typical "WhenWe".

The good old days and all that rubbish. Nothing I have ever played (computer games people keep your mind out of the gutter) on has ever compared to the Xbox 360. So why go backwards if you are only joining the community now?

n1hilist: Thanks for reminding me about Sopwith. Man what an awesome game in it's time.... all 4 colours of it :D

I love playing the old games but sadly I cant really put games onto my computer as its too old. Its terrible.

Interesting topic, but it's a little too elitist for me. One of the reasons I've been a gamer for many many years is that it was a subculture where I fitted in, and where there was no judgement. Unfortunately the gaming scene seems to be getting increasingly jock-ish, exclusive and snobby.

I welcome any and all new gamers to the scene.

I generally just ignore the snobby ones.

You get 2 types of gamers.

1. Games are their lives and they will do anything to win and tell you about it. They normally post useless things like u g07 p0Wn3ez.. or whatever the hell they say :D

2. People who play games because they are fun. They normally couldn't care less if they are thrashed and don't understand what the guys from 1. are saying :D

My bad ! How could I forget that. Oh well, it's a Sierra Classic, so you get the idea

while quake 1, 2 and 4 had proper single player options, quake 3 was intended solely as a multiplayer game, which it did pretty good... but it never struck my fancy...

my opinion? not like you people give a cr@p heheheh

ive been gaming since the age of 6 myself... but my brothers 8 year old kid has probably spent more time gaming in his short life than i have in my lifetime... and he is good, which SCARES me... he is a bigger gamer than i am, in spite of my experience with the old classics... in a few years time he will completely whip me in games, and i do not look forward to that.

retro is dead, long live gaming!
