Are you really a gamer ?

Well I was 12 when we got our first PC, a 386 SX/25, 2MB RAM, 128K Trident 8900 VGA Card, etc; (Yeah, I remember the spics lol) and I grew up with the oldschool (then) games and software.

I fail to see the point of being elitist about your oldschool roots (or lack of). I have friends that grew up with the ZX Spectrum, who started programming fractal generators when they were 11 years old, etc;

But it is pretty neat to know where games came from, how the technology ahs advanced and understand a bit of the plot behind it all, but it does not make one superior.

I may have played a lot of old games, and spent most of my early to late teens letting the cathode rays molest my retinas, but while doing so I missed out on a ton of other things in life.

It's really just preference and circumstance, but it does not make you a better (or worse) individual.

I can't agree with your statement at all Lord_spaceman. I have buddy that hasn't even heard of 70 % of the games you mentioned as classics and even if he has he never played them. Yet if you give him a game to play he will own you at it. I have yet to play a game that he wasn't better at then me and I have played a lot of the games you mentioned. I consider myself an avid gamer that will try any game once. I even help out at rAge every year because I want SA gaming to be so much better than it is now. A true gamer in my opinion is one who enjoys a game and is willing to try any game once.
 
Been playing since I was about 6 or something, used to love playing Command and conquer Red Alert and Worms 2 :D IMO Worms 2 is way more fun than the 3D versions & that the old games just create the background for the newer games of today. eg Command and Conquer 3, if you're never played any of the command and conquer series you're not gonna know the whole story like with Kane and GDI and NOD and with Red Alert, allies and soviet so you prop wont enjoy it as much...
 
Play games often = Gamer

Wether you 6 or 60 years of age its all the same, what we see as classics then it because we started gaming then, people see games now and in the future they will see these games as classics

I think im confusing myself!

Unfortunately, I think a generation of gamers is being raised without appreciation of it's history and where it's come from. They take gaming for granted and want the latest and greatest with no appreciation for older games.

Thats right in 1980's my father bought us an atari ,with the paddles,and the joystick that keeps breaking.ha.A game called pitfall and starwars,tank.
O i had tears in my eyes when i saw that atari box(atari meaning warning)
I did not know that the meanin of warniig,and never looked back.As a member of the ol schooll gamers society here,I truelly can say that most peole in my family today are all old school gamers,even my uncles and father.hell my uncle is like 58 and he has a ps2and he just love splintercell.(go on pops let it rip)

I have been playing games for a while now ,o the wonder years,and til today i have never ever got upset playing a game,Its only a game,"now where did i hear that saying"?But anyway,mu brother broke hes toe cause he is a class 1 gamer,
no one can beat him on street fighter,or tekken or mortalkbt.
He is the tekken master top 10 in cape town.
He is also willing to bet like a 500 bucks on a 3 round match.To him its not a game its status.SO he is just not a really gamer to me ,as for him its not fun all the time
You can start flaging me brther,as i know you will rea this post.
 
You mean, "Rise of the Triad"

That game bored me in single player, but multiplayer... that was one of the best!

Yeah i played redneck rampage , but i prefered good ol duke..that was still best game evar for multiplayer.
 
Redneck Rampage, Rise of the Triad, Heretic, DOOM, Wolfenstein 3D, Blake Stone, Duke Nukem 3D - they all bring a tear to my eye.
 
Blake Stone.. was that the FPS, or that platform/action game made by Blizzard? I can't remember.

Edit: Ah, it's the FPS, I almost completely forgot about that one!

On the topic of oldschool, I wish someone would make a remake of Death Track. I see there's a remake/inspired-by game based on Stunts, can't recall the name.

Wow, Death Track. I haven't even thought about that game in a decade.

You might be referring to Crashday.
