Johannesburg - Five men with firearms were arrested at Northgate shopping mall and parking lot on Tuesday afternoon, said police.

Captain Joseph Magoai said three 9mm pistols and an AK47 rifle were seized.

A security guard raised the alarm after seeing two men in a BMW parking far from the entrance, where they had dropped off two other men.

Police arrived, searched the BMW and found a 9mm pistol. They arrested the two men in the car.

Inside the mall, security guards saw a man walking with a firearm in his hand.

Magoai said the security guards confronted him, took the firearm and also arrested him.

Elsewhere in the mall, a shopper saw a man pushing a covered trolley and told the police.

Police seized a 9mm pistol being carried by the man pushing the trolley and confiscated an AK47 found in the trolley.

All five men - aged between 26 and 36 - were charged with the illegal possession of unlicensed firearms.

I'm scared to think of what people get away with if they have the balls to try stuff like this...

edit: and yeah, congrats to the cops for fast response etc :o

Good work and Kudos to all involved in the apprehension of these crims.

Damn.

I wonder what my reaction would be if I saw a guy casually walking in the mall with an AK-47!

All five men - aged between 26 and 36 - were charged with the illegal possession of unlicensed firearms -
fairly minorish type of offense, no? what about intent?

Intent being 99% of a crime.

Yeah think about it. People take their Makro cards with them if they need to buy something from Makro...

Hmmm and Ak47...that you can use at pretty much any store

I was thinking the same, they arent really in *** unless they can be linked to other armed robberies or something. pfffft, possesion of illegal firearms.....pfffft. Were they stolen firearms? AK47s are sposed to be illegal as they are fully automatic so they should be deep in the poo for that alone. Another useless bust apart from the fact that a terrible tragedy was averted.

Glad they got caught for a change. :) Hopefully those are just the initial charges and after they've gathered evidence and done some investigation they'll be charged with more serious crimes too.

I bet you a thousand primers they won't.

Koos "small price to pay" Custodiet :-)

There where 4 guys driving around in a White BMW in Randpark/Weltevreden who where committing armed robberies in the area.

Hopefully they can be linked to that as well as the residents can visually identify them....

Wow, the cops actually managed to confiscate some honest to goodness illegally owned firearms? Incredible... kudos to the public and guards who were on the ball enough to notice these people, and to the cops for following up properly.

A perfectly illiustrated example that the Police and therefore the Government are doing their share to reduce crime in the country ? - what are you doing ?

The statistics and truth disagrees with your sentiment. So take your Pro Government Propaganda and shove it where the sun don't shine, sunshine.

Oi, guys, be fair... this was a good case, and we all wish that the Police would handle more cases with this sort of diligence. So be positive, it's a step, rather say that this is a step forward for the SAP and that they should take care to ensure this sort of success in more cases.
