Two people were shot and injured following a hold-up at the Zwartkop Raceway on Saturday morning, Pretoria police said.

Six men armed with AK47s and handguns allegedly went to one of the club's gates where they threatened a guard at around 8am, said Inspector Paul Ramaloko. Warm up laps were underway at the time, with racing scheduled to begin at 9.30am.

"In panic, they shot and wounded a civilian who was walking towards the gate," he said.

On their way out, after stealing an undisclosed amount of money, they shot an on-duty metro police officer in the chest.

Netcare 911 paramedics said both patients were in a critical condition. They were airlifted from the scene by an Air Force helicopter and by Netcare911's Air Ambulance helicopter. Both patients were flown to Unitas Hospital, said spokesman Trevor Putterill.

The attackers escaped in two vehicles.

It frightens me that criminals have the freedom to walk right into a public sports event bearing AK47s. What is this country coming to?? How do we expect to host a spectacle in 2010 when we have instances of violence like this?
The blandness that this event was reported on and reacted to is also very disturbing.

Minister doesn't have to do anything but say 'last year we destroyed over one hundred thousand illegal guns as a sign of our commitment to keeping illegal guns away from the hands of criminals'. Never mind that the vast majority of these so-called illegal guns were actually hunting rifles handed in by legal gun owners. The number looks impressive, and so the Ministers and the President say 'well, we are doing all that we can', and then claim it's all just perception warped by a few high-profile events.

So in short: sleight of hand is easy when no-one's interested in looking. There's no accountability, no way for us to make this right, so people just don't care any more.

Thanks, looked into it in detail quite a while ago, came to the conclusion that gun control never really works, unless in a very "mild" form like not allowing insane ppl to have guns etc. I'll take a look at those articles though.
