Are these these technically classified as tanks?
I'm almost sure there must be some other term which is more correct.
Some member with more knowledge can educate us. In fact, let me google the classification of military vehicles for my own education.

Jacking up a Rooikat armoured car is a bit of a hassle when trying to steal the wheels...

The criminals these days are themselves jacked up on tik and whatever else, I suspect they are dumb enough to try.

Ratels with mounted 7.62mm Brownings would have worked better than Rooikats.

There are only a few operational Ratels left in SA, and a bunch of defunct scrap Ratels that have all been used for spare parts on the former.

The Badger variants (Hoefyster project) were supposed to have replaced all of the Ratels, years ago.

I suspect they are in kzn mostly because they can travel at highway speeds. Our borders are all north so doesn't make sense to keep that type of weaponry down south and traveling in some of the other dinosaurs takes more effort.

Wikipedia says 2 x MG4 7.62 mm machine guns.

Had, it now has one. With the upgrade from Mk1C to Mk1D, it lost one.

Co-axial mounted machine is not intended for precision shooting, the turrent must be rotated to aim it and it has a limited travel up and down. It is intended to keep the oponents heads down with suppressive fire while own infantery attack. Not a tactic you would use in an urban environment with "civilians" around. Like other people remarked Casspirs and those kinds of Armoured Personell Carriers are a much better option and cheaper by the way.

This.. complete overkill. Not something you can use to control crowds with. If anything this is to intimidate and not make obvious how many troops are deployed at a point (2 or 5?)

The Casspir being an APC is *exactly why* it's better for crowd control.

Last I checked, we were a constitutional democracy with due process of law and no death penalty.

Casspirs are ideal for deploying military or police servicemen to hotspots, in numbers, armed with rubber bullets, bean bag rounds and teargas... You know, crowd control.

Sure, the Rooikat brings shock and awe, but they have a critical lack of offensive or defensive capabilities in riot situations.

The crew can't use the weaponry on citizens, and that's not up for discussion.

No vehicles are use for crowd control ever.(except a water cannon.) These wont be used for crowd control either, so our EFF comrades can just relax.

Crowd control is always done on foot.

This doesn't mean having something intimidating to drive to were the crowds are doesn't help or is over kill.

How many of those 30 -40 year old and younger looters would remember the 80's? tactically the best vehicles for that riot control would be the Casspir.

The South African Olifant Main Battle Tanks don't have rubber cushioning pads on their steel tracks like tanks that are intended for use on hard surfaces do and therefore will wreck any tar road they're used on.
