Hi Guys,

Just wanted to know how much truth there is to this. My cousin says there is plans to replace the Police from the borders of SA and bring in the Army for that function again.

Now if this is true, I like this new government :)

For once they are being pro-active and putting an end to all this nonsense our country is having. With the Army on the borders, we have more police on the streets and the Army AFAIK has way bigger forces than the Police.

This would be damn brilliant.

They are sitting around doing nothing and when they do something they end up shooting each other, it would be great!!

My cousin is in the army in Bloem. But he can talk allot of crap sometimes :D
Just wanted to know if anyone know anything about it. I tried google but I get 1000's of pages with old border thingies.

It is true to the extent that's what our shiny new minister of police wants,
Mthethwa also wants the army to return to the borders.

"I would argue why would you want to have borders manned by the police and if you look at international trends the job of securing the country is done by the army.

wow, I'm stunned.

I like this guy :)

It's all very well sending the army to protect the borders, I'm sure it will help to a degree but what about "those people" (read Zimbabweans) who are now going to be legally entitled entry to the country anyway???? There's no point really is there? I know Zims isn't the only country on the border of SA...

+1 If this is the case I would welcome it as the first good thing the gouvernment has done in the last 3 years.

It's a start in the right direction not so ?

I've been for this for a long time and can't understand why it hasn't been done yet. I must say that after reading the article, I like this guy's way of thinking.

One worrying factor is that if (when) the army gets in cahoots with the cash in transit gangs, we're screwed. Border control, yes. Accompany CIT vans, sounds good in principle but I feel uneasy about that. As usual, I guess only time will tell.

The Zimbabweans can come and go without needing a Visa. However they still need to check in and out the proper border posts.

At this point in time all they need is wire cutters and the ability to dodge predators such as lions and crocs.

The army will therefore make sure that every Zimbo inside the country is accounted for.

This should be good! I heard that people can only come for 90 days and in those 90 days they are allowed to look for casual work. Is this true?

But hell we pay the fsckers to sit and do nothing so have them patrol our boarders the ones that are there for the gravy train will leave quickly if they have to do the hard work.

Nope afraid its the other way around. The police force is much bigger than the army the last I heard from a reliable person in the police.

With regards to the corruption we will do the same the polcie does. Every 3 months you replace all the people at the border with new people so the corruption process can start again. :p
Sounds extreme but some kind of rotating schedule will propably be implemented if they are smart.

Does make sense though to finally make the army earn their money and all. Too much time to get fat and lazy.

Good news.

They also need to get the border fence fully operational again.

In 1975 a 75-mile (120-kilometer) high security fence was erected by South Africa to keep the violent revolution in Mozambique from spilling into Kruger National Park. [1] In 1990 it was reported:
“ Concern is growing in South Africa over the country's use of a lethal, 3,300 volt one amp electrified fence on its borders with Mozambique and Zimbabwe.

A treaty signed on December 9, 2002 by the presidents of three countries - South Africa, Mozambique, and Zimbabwe allowed for the fence to be torn down in order to open the ancient elephant migration route between South Africa and Mozambique which was disrupted by the fence. The 13,513-square mile (35,000 square kilometer) Great Limpopo Transfrontier Park will connect the parks of three countries: South Africa's Kruger National Park, Mozambique's Limpopo National Park, and Zimbabwe's Gonarezhou National Park.[8]

I have been prayin for border patrols to resume for ages..the images of people taking sunday afternoon walks through the border fence made me sick..

this nonsense of having offered shelter to our exiles is getting pretty old..

I love the noise that the gov has been making regarding hardcore crime...give them what they want!!

The Army guys I have seen are very disciplined. True there is still an element of corruption. But I say bring back conscription and send all the newbs to the border to do 6 months as their final stretch of the 2 years service.

It's a win/win for this country as a whole.

Yes the kruger is open but it's to have our elephants poached. They were getting to much flack for culling them so they thought this would work.... they just never thought the elephants had more brains than the politicians. The elephants does not cross the boarder... they remember like the paths they walk that there is danger:D

And i'm not sure if the boarder to zim is open yet. Mr Bob said he does not want out tb lions and wildebeest...:D

Some of them will be very professional yes but it has been proven that our border postings are a sure way of corrupting people. Not even talking about the people thing, just goods and illegal substances.

For crying out loud we have a union in the army! The drill seargents must have had an fit when they brought that one in. How do you teach a slodier discipline if he preaches about his rights and not wanting to do what he is told?!

It's a shame our military doesn't have a better image as a good employer for young people but I think this comes more from the younger generation (I am part of it yes) being too lazy to do do a good days labour and to feel proud for doing so.

I would love to know where you guys get this picture of the army being a holiday resort  Seriously, they still get PWNED bad in their basic training. They still break those people down and rebuild them.

I would honestly like to see where you guys are getting this from.

Sure long serving members have it nice, just like they did 20 years ago. The recruits (first 2 years) are still being treated just the same as you or your father was ;) Thus the reason I say, bring back conscription and make the reserves doing their 2 year basic stand border patrol for the last 6 months.

"They still break those people down and rebuild them. " all lies they use propaganda/spartan society(Google it) tactics not to rebuild them, they brain wash them to serve their masters.
