Durban - R50 000 for having his life put “in the toilet” by wrongful arrest is hardly compensation for the emotional trauma it caused him, says the victim.

SAPS Durban North officers brought Phumelela Njabulo Mathenjwa’s afternoon jog to an abrupt end on March 10, 2010.

They pointed their guns in the uMhlanga resident’s face, accused him of being a sought-after criminal, and assaulted and arrested him.

After spending more than 24 hours in a squalid prison cell, Mathenjwa said he was released when the police realised they had the wrong man, but he received no explanation or apology.

I would say laugh it off as an experience, but the assault thing is where you draw the line.

Stop whinging and get yourself a lawyer.
 
Being locked up in a South African holding cell can quite easily become a death sentence.
 
He's very lucky. Saying it has thrown his life "in the toilet" is a little dramatic. I don't know what he went through exactly but it could have been a lot worse. I was locked up for 3 days and assaulted by the police over an ex's lies. You get up, brush it off and keep trucking.

This part I agree with. The guy is being very dramatic.

I hope you sued the ex, or did something. Lies about domestic abuse are terrible and no society should tolerate somebody crying wolf.

I dropped it. She had very dodgy connections that were very intimidating. I wanted to persue it but was convinced by family and friends to just let it go. Was a very schitty 3 days and I missed two days of work and was sick for a week but it could have been far worse an am just glad it wasn't.

The court's holding cells were a fscking nightmare...

Tell me about it. Recent experience tells me how family abuse the system to get to abuse and control freak their own kids. The end result is I am sitting with a "temporary" additional dependant since recent.

That's great for you but he doesn't need to react to and deal with it the same way you did. You don't get to dismiss his feelings just because you live your life like an Aaliyah song.
