Durban - A hijacker nabbed following a shootout with police on the KwaZulu-Natal north coast on Monday has turned out to be a policeman, police said.

Superintendent Muzi Mngomezulu said police noticed a white VW Golf being followed by a maroon Nissan Sentra near KwaDukuza (formerly Stanger) in the early hours of Monday morning.

When police attempted to stop the vehicles, the men in the two cars opened fire on the officers. A shootout ensued and the five men abandoned their vehicles and fled on foot.

However, the officers managed to arrest one of the suspects - a 25-year-old constable from the Newark police station about 35 kilometres north of KwaDukuza near the Tugela River.

Police also heard a noise from the boot of the Golf. When they opened it they discovered the owner of the car. He had been hijacked shortly after 02.30 while driving along the R102 near KwaDukuza.

The constable was expected to appear in court shortly and faces charges of hijacking, kidnapping, armed robbery and attempted murder.

"The Provincial Commissioner (Hamilton Ngidi) of KwaZulu-Natal has complimented the excellent work done by the police in KwaDukuza and emphasises that no room for corrupt members will ever exist in this province," said Mngomezulu.

Sad, it seems then that people only become police officers to get a job, not because it is an honorable vocation :(

+1 Agreed.

It's like a job that doesn't require you to make an effort, look at most of our policemen and woman... they're lazier than street cleaners.

My feeling is that if you attack/shoot a cop etc. your punishment needs to more severe to get people to respect the police etc. However this needs to cut both ways and cops guity of crime need to be punished harshly as well.

100% right :(

There is no more pride in being a police officer.

But then again the general populace don't make the police feel wanted or repected.

vicious circle :(

Lol how is it that in a shoot out between the cops, another cop and 5 other guys that nobody gets shot?

That's some harsh generalizing. I wonder if the cops that got killed trying to protect your neighbourhood while you were in lala land also gets lumped into this "most" category?? Don't just type comments for the sake thereof please.

Respect is EARNED.

I know from experience that even if a policemen catches a criminal with his hand in your cookie jar some people will always find something wrong.

If you wanna become a criminal, then being a cop is a great choice with obvious perks.
Kinda the same as if you wanna be a pedo, then becoming a teacher or a priest puts you in the position you wanna be right?

typical of any country

every country have corrupt police, its typical of a police force not of this country alone

wow very lucky owner i say
