Article: 1500 drunk drivers arrested

Why don't I see any thing about crimes like murder and rape going down? Or is drunk driving a worse crime?

I also hate this new system. one beer can get you jailed? Wtf? One beer a minute? one beer an hour? on beer a day? It's no wonder why there's so many 'drunk driver' convictions... people feel fine to drive and drive home then get caught.

They should either make it that no driver on the road should drink drive, lower the consequences for first and 2nd timers, but comith that 3rd time, you sit in jail for 3 months. Or have the cops judge if the driver is capable to drive. Different people react differently to alcohol, and although I feel sober after two to three beers, and don't drive reckless, I'll get thrown in jail.

Meh, I don't drink drive anymore anyways. Just because I don't know what is legal and what isn't.

Yeeeeaaaaah... Sorry, but if you're drinking, you shouldn't be driving. It's just plain irresponsible. The term designated driver comes to mind. I don't see how it's in any way excusable.

People often ask how much can they drink before they go past the limit?

Here is a "basic" answer:

1 metric tot is 8,4 g of ethyl alcohol.
The average beer contains between 13 - 16 grams of ethyl alcohol.
One beer is therefore ± equivalent of a double eg brandy.
In trials all the participants (Male & Female students) exceeded the legal limit = 0,05g/dl after two beers.

According to the Widmark formula:

A = p x c x 10 x r
A = amount of alcohol in grams
p = mass of the person
x 10 = to convert promille ( parts per thousand) to g/dl or g/%
"r" = Widmark factor which is on average 0,7 for men and 0,6 for females.
c = blood alcohol level.

Blood alcohol level = A divided by p x r x 10.

As far as wine is concerned: It would depend on whether you are referring to fortified wine or not. (Fortified implying that alcohol had been added to the wine)

Usually on any bottle the % of alcohol is indicated. 10% would imply 10 grams/alcohol per 100 ml of wine. Then once again the Widmark formulae can be applied to get an estimation of expected blood alcohol level.

It's really simple: if you're going to drive, don't drink.

Motorist 32 times over alcohol limit

East London - A drunk motorist was arrested near Queenstown in the Eastern Cape after allegedly being found to be 32 times over the alcohol limit, the department of transport said on Thursday.

The motorist was driving a Mercedes-Benz Vito at about 23:00 on Wednesday when he was stopped by police.

Blood tests were conducted on him and he was found to have an alcohol content of 1.6g/100ml.

This is 32 times over the limit of 0.05g/100ml.

Five boys and a woman, who were also in the vehicle with 15 sheep allegedly stolen from nearby farms, were also arrested.

WTF ?????

this seems to be the status quo belief now, but its really complete bullsh|te which every half intelligent person knows.

even after all the roadblocks and arrests for "drunk" driving, the death rate is even more than ever.

when the cops learn how to POLICE traffic correctly like is done in every other country, maybe then we'll have some success. But bragging about 1500 ppl who were arrested for having one glass of wine too many at dinner isn't gonna solve a damn thing.

You'd think that a half-intelligent person would rather be safe than sorry, pity that half a brain is so difficult to come by.

Actually, so far it's 717 fatalities in comparison to last year's 984.

The thing is that 1,500 people weren't arrested for having one glass of wine too many at dinner, they were arrested for driving under the influence.

You know, the phrase, "Don't drink and drive" comes to mind. If you know you are going to drive, then why drink? Obviously it's too difficult to just settle for something non-alcoholic or stopping after one glass of wine

Like a certain poet said: "alcohol is the root of all evil, we must finish it before the children gets to it", but don't get behind a steering wheel my pedigree chumps!!

Seriously, if you've been confronted with the negative side of drunken driving, you'll think twice of doing it yourself. I've lost a couple of friends with their kids due to other drunk people driving! DON'T DRINK AND DRIVE

I also think the safe limit would depend on the person, what their body can handle and their personality. But of course we're not all going to get drunk driving licenses, where our skills are tested under the influence, then that limit is printed on our drivers license :)

Luckily for me I have no interest in alcohol anymore... it lowers the consciousness.

But on the plus side it means the cops are actually doing something USEFUL for a change. I get so frustrated with the MASSIVE emphasis on "speeding". In a modern vehicle, doing 131 km/h in a 120 km/h zone makes cops drool. The 'easy target' is the motorist with a fixed address!! My gripe is that they spend more time on speed traps than on roadworthy vehicles -- you know the kind ... once was white but now a sort-of-grey-but-not-really-a-colour-I-can-describe shade ... which has one tail light working but only as bright as a candle. You are out on the road at night with these idiots driving 40 km/h as you approach him at even the legal 120 km/h you nearly ride into him as you'll only see him at the last second!

But by far my greatest peeve is people who cannot even drive the speed limit -- always 10 or 20 km/h UNDER it -- AND who then must always drive in the 'fast lane'. Makes me LIVID.

But I digress ... so kudos to the cops for making a difference by keeping the dangerous drivers off the streets. I hope it is that, though, and not another soft target case where the guy is actually quite capable of driving, as a few other posters have stated.

Its not for us. As MJ said, they don't really care about us. (the wellbeing of the people)
And thats not a negative comment, thats just how it is. the system is a joke.
