Article: 22 arrested in Gauteng

Eight people were arrested for possession of drugs, six for illegal immigration, four for drinking in public, two for driving without licences and two for fraud and possession of a stolen motorbike.

Since when do you get arrested for driving without a license ?

Since its actually illegal to drive without a license, otherwise why do we all have to go for a driving test and have to pass?

I was pulled over a couple months ago and forgot my license in my company car. i was not arrested, i never had any form of identification nor did they check my id number on their computers. 1k fine which was halved when i showed my license.

It's illegal to drive without a license and to drive without a license :D.

you just need to go to a police station and show your licence within 48 hours and they will withdraw the charges.

friend doesn't have a license, was pulled over the other day and had to pay a fine, no arrest

Driving without carrying your license is very different to driving without a license.

I'm going to assume the two who were arrested actually didn't have a license.

How would they know? when i was caught without carrying my license they never checked, so explain how they magically knew i had one?

Or the plods were on some power trip trying to make examples. Or are we running out of real criminals? No license? That's an administrative offense for which there is a fine.

I'm going to guess that this was in one of those large roadblocks where they can check things of this nature.. not just a random 3 or 4 cop car road block.

I am of course making assumptions, but I would have guessed driving without a license (as in never having done the driving test) is a criminal offence that carries more than just a fine.

Driving whilst not carrying your license is an administrative offense with a fine.

More than likely but getting arrested is still a bit strange.

I will agree its strange, but I don't think its necessarily a power hungry cop, I think its some cops that are enforcing the law as it is supposed to be enforced.

Yup but it is easier to write a 1k fine. Easy money, enforcing the law and cops seems a bit strange.

Driving without having a license is a criminal offense? So you'd get a criminal record and could possibly serve jail time?

Perhaps if you killed someone.

Much like speeding is a criminal offense but you do not get a criminal record or spend time in jail, unless you are going way way over the speed limit.

Yes, as usual.

Driving without even having a license is still an administrative offense.

Technically it is a crime but it doesn't appear on the schedule 1 list of offenses. It is therefore something dealt with by a lower court, if even at a court at all - hence administrative offense. Pay your fine and off you go. This is plods racking up the numbers.
