There were reports he was three times over the legal limit. He will appear in court next month, Queensland Police Force said in a posting on their Facebook page.
Police stopped the car when they noticed it had no lights on despite it being dark.
"I shake my head and am shocked by the madness of this," Queensland Transport Minister Scott Emerson told national broadcaster ABC.
The boy has been placed in the care of relatives.

Reminds me of a story my boss told me. The went to visit a lion park near Krugersdorp a number of years ago. His wife pointed out that a car some distance ahead was driving a bit erratic. Eventually the car stopped at a feeding point and two boys, aged about 9 and 7, got out and relieved themselves behind a bush. Problem (apart from getting out in the middle of the park, right at the feeding point) is that they got out of the front seats. Mom and dad was in the backseat having a drink while boetie drove the car.
