Article: Accept mining realities in SA: Lonmin CEO

The current wage demand by labour union Amcu in the platinum sector is unaffordable, Lonmin CEO Ben Magara said on Thursday.

"I feel for the challenges they [mineworkers] are going through... We are working hard but it is difficult... the demand is unaffordable," he said.

"The world is watching us take each other into poverty... We need to accept the realities."

They strike for weeks and then are surprised when there are no jobs to return to.It's mind boggling the how unintelligent these jokers are.

I personally don't think it's the majority of Rock Drill Operators [RDOs] causing the ****. I'm speculating here as I don't know how structured/tiered the hierarchy is in a union like AMCU, but you'll find that the guys causing the **** will probably be a capo or something inside of AMCU that are told to rile the emotions of the workers. You'll probably find most of the RDOs roll their eyes when these guys come around demanding a strike and think to themselves, "Not again."

Agreed!

Problem is these AMCU morons will probably go ape when they see the trucks delivering the machines replacing them and then they will burn the trucks.

I'm 99% sure that's what the EFF's plan is, and they're pulling strings together with other politicians behind the scenes. The only way for the ANC to be dethroned is via extreme methods... So they're going to create such conditions...

agreed. Looks more and more like this scenario..

Sad thing is that the workers are the ones who will suffer in the end but the instigators will be sitting high and dry...

what I want to know is how are these workers surviving for this long without any salaries??
especially due to the fact that apparently most of them are in major debt with the microlenders .... so how can they go months without income to pay for food, etc.??

Unions subsidies the striking workers. Also micro Lenders are having a field day.....

Surely the unions will not provide anything close to the wages of the workers, which means they all getting more into debt with the micro lenders??
The gov/regulator should be keeping a close eye on the microlenders in the area to make sure they not flouting the law and over indebting the workers. At this rate, in 6 months time they will want another huge increase to pay off the micro lenders for the time they were striking!!

Hahahaha, have you met out government? I doubt they care if some 3000 people are being over indebted.

It is really sad that even with the proposed increases I doubt they will see the positive cash flow from it in the first three years due to the striking and debt costs they are currently suffering.

Support of family, relatives and neighbours. I know many unemployed people who earn 0 and yet have clothes on their back and more often than not do not lose weight as result of food shortages. People make do with what they have.

Yes, more unemployed, uneducated men with nothing to do all day is exactly what is needed by the ANC and EFF

Let's educate them with degrees in Women's Studies and Ethnic music. Then they can be educated and unemployed. :)
