Article: Arrest loitering school children: MEC

Their principals claimed to the MEC the reason for their under-performance was "witchcraft", Mabuza said.

Well they convinced me.

Again with the parenting fail. Parents should be held responsible for what their children are doing during school hours, it shouldn't be a police matter unless a crime was committed.

And witchcraft? How backwards, falls in the same category as 'the forefathers will punish them for not voting for the ANC'. Sad that these are the are caliber of people responsible for educating the youth.

Arrest them 'ey?

A tad extreme although I guess he has a point since many of these school "children" aren't even minors. Knowing the logic that floats around these parts though, we'll probably soon be reading headlines about a class of grade ones being kept overnight in a holding cell somewhere.

Children found loitering during school hours in uniform need to be arrested,

So if they got rid of their school uniform, it would be ok?
How about kids begging at traffic lights? Shouldn't they be in school?

Their principals claimed to the MEC the reason for their under-performance was "witchcraft", Mabuza said.

"The principals said that the learners did not trust each other, and they believed that there are learners within the schools who are bewitching them.

  How more backwards can you get?!!

These kids dont even have water in their school which is sad considering the heat. That could be the reason why they are fainting.

this guy is mad, what are police supposed to do with loitering school kids?lock them up?under which law?

Children found loitering during school hours in uniform need to be arrested, Mpumalanga safety and security MEC Vusi Shongwe said.

And when you're done with that, arrest the MPs that sleep in Parliament and the Ministers that are wasting my taxes on luxuries.

Our political leaders aren't being a shining beacons of morality by resorting to force. Children pick up on these things. They young are just a product of their parents and surroundings.

Well in the USA & UK truant officers are deployed to do just that. Yes it's the parents responsibility to ensure that their children are in school, but most parents work to put food on the table so they cannot be around to ensure this. Attending school is enforced by law to a certain age/grade so if children are NOT in school during the normal school hours they are breaking the law in a sense and should be arrested or taken to school and get the guardians/parents in the next day to discuss this matter.

Education is a RIGHT not a privilege and I for one would like to see more involvement from the government to ensure ALL children get a basic education up to at least grade 10. The South African education system has been turning out thousands of unskilled labour since before 1994. Lets put out more educated, skilled young South Africans that can become upstanding, contributing members of OUR society. IMHO anyway :p

Glad I don't live in this police state

This isn't actually happening and it definitely isn't going too. That principal should be back at school himself, he's blaming his problems on witchcraft and asking for his pupils to be arrested. One moron's word don't become state policy you know..

Please tell me this is a massive typo, as nobody should blame whichcraft in the 21st century.
