Article: Banned baby names

New Zealand officials on Wednesday released a list of baby names put forward by parents that were rejected because they were too bizarre or offensive, including "Lucifer" and "Mafia No Fear".

The list of 77 names reveals one child was set to be called "Anal" before the Department of Internal Affairs vetoed the proposal, while another narrowly avoided being dubbed "." or full stop.
 
what is wrong with princess? that is a common name in SA.
 
What's wrong with Benson and Hedges? A friend of mine named his boys Murray and Stewart. (that was before they amalgamated with Roberts Construction.)

Seriously, "Talula Does The Hula From Hawaii"?? "Number 16 Bus Shelter"?? Though to be fair, "2nd", "3rd" or "5th" makes sense. ;)

What about Peter, Paul, Mark, Luke and John? Then there are Jason, Joseph, Aaron, Benjamin, David, Caleb and so on. Jokes aside in principle I understand the concern that parents don't take into consideration how mean, nasty and cruel children are. Then again a child can be raised proud of their name and there is no real limit once the state starts deciding what parents may call their children. Especially in these times of worrying excessively about everyone's feelings.

This thread reminds me of the Sacha Baron Cohen, as Ali G's interview with David and Victoria Beckham... They talk about naming kids after the places they were conceived and he comes up with: "That would be a well good idea though what, cos if me and me Julie had a kid, we'd call him Langley Village. His full name would be The bogs in KFC in Langley Village!"
 
While I agree that some of those names on the list are just plain idiotic, I do not think government should be able to prevent a parent from naming their child what they want. Hopefully sanity would prevail on the side of the parents ?

...but if govts didn't stop stupid people from doing stupid stuff then there would be anarchy.

Go one step further and stop them having kids if they already can't respect having them from day 1.
 
Some parents are plain stupid.
A friend from school had the 2nd name "Adolf".

Really, wtf were the parents thinking. Did they just fail to see any connection ?
