Article: Build more prisons: IFP

A riot at Groenpunt prison this week underlined the urgent need for more prisons, the IFP said on Thursday.

Officials had failed to contain the situation because of the high number of inmates at the prison, in the Free State, said Inkatha Freedom Party correctional services spokesman Velaphi Ndlovu.
 
I sort of agree with the idea of more prisons. Although it can never curb the crime rate, a prison that is not hideouly overpopulated may offer a better chance of rehabilitation. At the moment our prisons are not much more than detention centres that simply unleash criminals back into society at the end of sentence. Given a bit of rehabilitation and skills training the inmates on release may be able to find basic employment instead of having to rely on their criminal skills to survive.
Although a utopian ideal, it is better than the current situation.
