When our industries shut down because of subsidised foreign products, we most certainly don't reap any benefits.

Levelling the playing fields against subsidised foreign products is not protectionism.

That's what I mean, we have to come down from those ideas of "Living Wages and Decent Jobs " How do all those unemployed, people in informal employment, and parttime jobs, on social grants scrape by on household incomes in the range from R 1000 to R3000 a month. Surely they struggle immensely.
But how about those workers in the garment factories of Bangladesh, where the minimum wage just has been raised to a meager 68 US$ PM ????? We surely don't have to go that low. And should never , ever compromise on occupational health and safety, allow child labour, etc. But somewhere along the line we have to make very painful sacrifices and difficult compromises to really make a serious dent in our destabilising unemployment rates.

Call it what ever you like, but we really have to look much deeper at the core issues underpinning our struggling economy, and high unemployment.
Do you buy the bulk of your groceries at the quite expensive corner cafe, or twice a month from the nearest Hyper or supermarket ? Why are you not supporting the small local guy, who comes in so handy, when you still need something on saturday 19h30, when busy with a braai with friends ??? Do you support your small local computer shop or you get our beloved electronic gadgets from the big retailers and online businesses ?

mmm strange how you encourage us to buy local but you give money to a ministers wife ( disguised as a empowerment project ) to open a exclusive boutique supplying imported products.

Do you buy local Minister? I wonder what your suit says. And your furniture?
What about those expensive shoes you wear and the gifts you buy your kids.

Take all your local South African and Chinese s**t where ever you want to, I will keep buying my Levis, Ray-bans, and keep supporting the expensive companies who import or manufacture their goods here. I want nothing to do with your f**kedup government or corrupt companies you are dealing with.

I have been supporting major international brands the past 10 years with money proudly made in SA and will keep doing so....

It's irrelevant to me. Buying local is a good strategy, if you can, irrespective of whether or not politicians do all the time or not. It's a good message irrespective of where it comes from. We all need to make money and buying local, when you can, means it's more likely we can make the money we need...

no argument from me.

But with us being taxed to death (e-tolls now).. how can we afford to buy local (usually more expensive) with less money in our pockets. So the R500 I could have spend on something local is now going to government....
 
Minister Davies should practice what his preaches, it would be music to Pravin Gordhan's ears. Why do government all drive super expensive imported (German) vehicles? What is wrong with a South African built BMW 3 series or Mercedes C-Class? For those mayors who have left their municipalities' roads in such a dilapidated state, the Toyota Fortuner and Ford Ranger could do the job perfectly. For those lower ranks the VW Polo and Toyota Corolla will have to do! Imagine how it would boost the local economy and lower the current account deficit!
