Coca-Cola CEO Muhtar Kent insists his company is not responsible for the rise in US obesity despite New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg's recent moves to limit the consumption of sugary drinks.

"This is an important, complicated societal issue that we all have to work together to provide a solution," Kent told the Wall Street Journal in an interview published late Monday.

More a case of someone trying to blame someone else for their own deficiencies. I know a person that when thirsty only consume coke or pepsi and now and then bottled water and he is not obese. Rather then blame the sugar companies for making sugar?

You are obese because everything food are readily available and you are a "vraat" or you have a true medical disorder like diabetes, period.

america's tendency to unhealthy eating is interesting.
i just don't know if they care about their obesity.

i heard a news report the other day about how starbucks is battling upsell food with their coffee.
they have now bought a pastry chain to supplement their breakfast menu.
the reporters weren't convinced that americans want pastry for breakfast.
it seems they would rather eat meat and starch dripping in oil and sugar.

the issue i have with legislating or popularising "healthy" drinks/foods is that you end up with an idiocracy scenario.
people consuming things with a "healthy" label, but not bothering to look at the ingredients.
vitamin water being a case in point. at which point is a drink with a large proportion of additives no longer water?

while i'm all for people making better choices, i'm not sure that governments regulating choice is ever a good idea.

It is not coke in itself but more of a whole "menu" full of unhealthy foods... well that and the fact that physical excersize is not on the top 10 things to do list.

Sugary drinks definitively contribute to obesity in most people and we all know the end result of obesity, so a warning label is in order here.

While the sizes of some food stuffs in the US is scary, you are right. It's the whole lifestyle over there that's the problem. What's scary is that while we think this is an American problem, SA isn't exactly the healthiest country either.

Very bad poll added, obesity makes you fat not coca cola, it only contributes when an obese person over consume on sugary drinks.

It is your own decision in what you eat which makes you fat.

So it is up to you to eat healthy - and remain thin.

There's nothing wrong in consuming junk food - if only in very small quantities, and only as a treat.

FWIW if I overindulge on some big monster burger, and get a heart attack, it was my own decision, not the restaurant's decision...

Coke doesn't make you fat. YOU make YOU fat.

Might as well start blaming spoons for making people fat.

3rd in the world iirc on the obesity rankings :(

it's lazy ****s that don't do anything and drink nothing but coke. of course you're going to get fat. why don't you limit the size of chairs then as the bigger chairs just encourage people to get fat.

the fact is, people have a choice. they can pick coke, or they can pick something else like apple juice. they pick coke because it tastes better and they should pay for the consequences.

coke in the USA is made with high fructose corn syrup unlike here in SA where it's made with sugar, HFCS is worse than sugar and yes, both are contributing factors to obesity, HFCS is a sugar substitute in many US food products

WTF do manufacturers add sugar to peanut butter? 'Cos sugar is addictive and sells products.
