Article: Cop arrested for shooting robber

A police officer who killed a robber in a shootout at a fast food outlet has been arrested for murder, the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) said on Wednesday.

A police captain had been arrested for murder and defeating the course of justice, IPID spokesman Moses Dlamini said in a statement.

Before anyone jumps the gun, I think this part is important:

Dlamini said: "At the time, it was reported that the suspect was shooting at the police captain. An investigation was conducted and it has revealed that this version was false."

Did the police officer say he was shot at, but found to be lying or was it just the media reporting that he was shot at? If the officer was lying then this arrest is justified.

I'm very concerned about this but yes let's wait to see how this plays out.
Just no justice anymore.
Did the suspect have a gun? Did he point the firearm at the cop?

Well, then they shouldn't call it a "Shootout", should they....
A other fact is, 2 other officers were shot, must he hen just put his gun away and wait for the criminals to give themselves up.
I feeling sorry for the police, they can't even do their job, then everyone starts pointing fingers at them. Point the other way, please.

The suspect did not only have a gun, he had just shot dead another police officer and wounded a third.
So this police captain shot him dead.
The investigation later turned out that the robber was not actually shooting directly at the police captain when he shot him dead.
Hence him being charged with murder. Utterly ridiculous, but hopefully the court case will exonerate him.

So if the criminal was shooting at the mcdonalds mascot 5m to the left of the police officer - then the police officer must use his magical telepathy powers to deduct that the criminal is not shooting at him / or just a bad shot , and do nothing since it's okay to shoot at something else as long as it's not at the said officer himself ???

Oh WTF, surely the police have the right to protect somebody else from being shot at?

Bad for the cop, but the only good robber is a dead robber so it's a win overall.

Yes they do. And so do you.

But there is still a death and it follows the procedure. Odd that he was arrested though. Usually the firearm is sent in for ballistics testing.

I wonder if the suspect dropped his gun before being shot?

Who in their right mind would come up with a law that makes it possible for this officer to be arrested?

I like to imagine that they, Step 1, make all the possible options for the circumstance.
Step 2. Draw blocks with the possible options in a nice open space. ie: Block one, give officer R1,500. Block two, arrest the officer. Block three, fire the officer. Block four, have no affect.
Step 3. Place a chicken in the middle of the area and decapitate.
Step 4. Where the chicken lands up is the new law.
