Article: Cops had to use force: Phiyega

The shooting of 34 workers on a hilltop near Lonmin mine in Marikana, Rustenburg, happened after the police rolled out barbed wire, police chief Riah Phiyega said on Friday.

As the police deployed the barbed wire, a group of protesters tried to outflank them.

I'm glad the army din't get involved. We would be talking a different story. But I agree with Phiyega. Had to be done. It is about time that the C word becomes entrenched in the minds of lawless people - CONSEQUENCES...

Entire army wiped out by spear wielding protesters probably would be the headline :D

So I guess this is the way of the police chief stating that she approves the actions the cops took to maintain order?

I agree with Phiyega, the police did need to use force, there were shots fired by at least one of the militant murderous strikers, it is the extent and undisciplined way that the police used force which I do not agree with.

The police that did panic, probably did so because they felt exposed on account of not being in or behind armour plated vehicles. There were several Nyalas in the camera footage, but no one ducking for cover behind the vehicles, instead they just opened fire on a dust cloud.

IMHO the outcome would have been completely different if the police had taken cover when the first shots rang out, and then identified the shooter(s) (there were only about 5 handguns), the police also did not have to aim directly into the crowd, they could have fired at the ground in front of the strikers to stop them from advancing towards the police.

That would have had the same affect. Bullets would richochet and travel in random directions.
(urgh, mobile ui sucks so I'll stop here).

Sure buddy.
Wait till you are fired upon. Shoot at the dirt in front of your assailant and let's see how that works out for you.
You weren't there.
It's nice to be an armchair judge though ;)

The angles involved would have resulted in far fewer fatalities.

It is true that I was not there, it is not true that I have not been in several similar situations, my comments are from experience albeit in a different time.
