Article: Cosatu has expelled Zwelinzima Vavi

The Congress of SA Trade Unions has expelled its general secretary Zwelinzima Vavi, SABC news reported on Monday.

SABC News tweeted: "#SABCNews has reliably learnt that #Cosatu general secretary #Zwelinzima #Vavi has been expelled. What's your reaction? @SABCNewsOnline".
 
Nothing seems to be running well in this country, there are battles everywhere and no end in sight. The leaders have lost focus on what's important and we are the ones to suffer the consequencies

Zweli stood up to el presidente - it was a matter of time before he saw the door. Even if it means destroying the alliance, he has to be out.

Without a doubt, yes....

I would be surprised to see the alliance being quite as strong come 2019... hell maybe even 2016 will have some interesting results.
 
Seven unions come out in support of Vavi

Cape Town - Seven trade unions have come out in support of suspended Cosatu general secretary, Zwelinzima vavi. They are: CWU (Communication Workers Union), Numsa (National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa), Fawu (Food and Allied Workers Union), Saccawu (South African Commercial, Catering and Allied Workers Union), Sasawu (South African State and Allied Workers Union), Denosa (Democratic Nursing Organisation of South Africa), Safpu (South African Football Players Union).

Vavi has condemned the decision of the federation’s NEC to dismiss him with immediate effect.

"I condemn the decisions of the NEC, which dismissed the general secretary who was democratically elected," he said at a press conference at a house in Morningside.

"Those pursuing the capture of Cosatu are being ruthless against anyone who stands in their way. They are seemingly oblivious to the working class.

"The leadership think they can continue with business as usual, but this will be impossible," he said.

According to Vavi this reflects a broader crisis in South Africa.

"Unemployment is spreading. Crime and corruption is endangering state institutions - underlying unemployment, crime and corruption is endangering all formations in society including democratic institutions," he said.

On Tuesday the Congress of South African Trade Unions confirmed Vavi’s suspension and accused him of several violations.

Deputy General Secretary, Bheki Ntshalintshali, told a press conference that Vavi was a divisive figure in the federation and that he shifted Cosatu resources to aid Numsa.

Craven quits Cosatu following Vavi's expulsion

Cape Town - Long-time Congress of SA Trade Unions national spokesperson Patrick Craven has resigned following the expulsion of general secretary Zwelinzima Vavi.

Craven attended a media briefing held by Vavi on Wednesday in Johannesburg.

He said he handed in his resignation on Tuesday. Although Craven said he still believed in the principles of Cosatu, he could not defend its decisions.

Vavi was expelled from Cosatu during a special central executive committee meeting held on Monday. Vavi boycotted the meeting.

At the briefing Vavi said he is adamant that his expulsion from the trade union federation was unfair and illegal.

"I am... in consultations on whether or not I should challenge my extremely irregular, illegal and completely unjustified expulsion as general secretary of Cosatu," he said.

"I have no doubt that the dismissal is unfair and illegal. I have been dismissed without a hearing conducted by an independent chairperson."

Vavi joining the EFF

Vavi has long been skeptical of the tripartite alliance, and when asked about his move to the Economic Freedom fighters talked about how the ANC had stabbed workers in the back.

"When I was general secretary I was bound by that, I had to abide by Cosatu's stance on the alliance. Now I am free.

"At Aurora the president's own family failed to pay mineworkers their promised wage.

"That is the tripartite alliance," Vavi said.

"The fight for workers' rights cannot be won, when we claim people who don't pay their staff are our allies," Vavi said.

When asked for comment, EFF leader Julius Malema said “I once said that he was the only revolutionary remaining in Cosatu. Now I say welcome home my brother, welcome to the revolution.”
