Article: Dear Apple I'm Leaving

Exactly, not to mention that he never discovered the potential of Siri (beyond the teenage novelty aspect that he implies most users also resort to).

I'm surprised that "The Macalope" went so easy on him.

Speaking of Siri, which is for stupendous reason limited to whatever devices Apple deemed fit (just like they limit Wifi-Hotspot and nonsense like that, same OS, limits per device for no reason other than to force you to buy more Apple devices) :

Google released an update to its free search app that includes much better voice searching. It offers a challenge to Siri in terms of speed and search capability, although there are points of comparison and there are differences as well.

Again, Apple's "planned obsolescence" strategy is going to backfire on them. I've had my IPad for ages, but Apple never thought maybe i'd like to do this Siri stuff on a tablet too? So here comes Google, and they release the same thing on any OS, any device and actually seemingly competes with Siri . I mean seriously...who's got their heads in the sand here?

care to explain why?

I've explained my resoning in several threads in the main news section. Bottom line: Modern UI sux and as it relates to this thread the writer of the letter to Apple will be no better off jumping ship to Microsoft. Modern UI still requires a lot of work and a person will still be far better served on the Apple side. I will for sure not trade OS X in for Modern UI. Never. Apple is taking a more intelligent approach to the eventual integration of OS's. Microsoft just went bananas to brag about being there first ... first with a flop yes. My opinion from buying a brand new Dell XPS 13 with Windows 8 on it.

The thing is apple will sell a lot of products even with problems like the maps fiasco. Ask all your friends and neighbors if they know about apple faults and the fight between samsung and apple in the courts. 99% of my friends doesn't know anything about it and they will buy a product because it looks cool or whatever they like about it.

Apple is not gonna loose a lot of customers because of faulty apps, most of their customers doesn't know about it before they buy it.

I still like the fights about apple and samsung. Better than the damn movies on actionX!

So you mean I can run Google's Siri-rip-off on any legacy device running Android? That's impressive!

Sure I have Jellybean on all my old phones, Sensation, Desire... phones that aren't "officially" supported anymore.

Even though google might have implemented Google voice after Siri many many reviewers find Google Voice Search much better than Siri. And there's no shame in taking someone's idea and implementing it better than they could, apple has been doing that for years, improving on ideas from other companies with great success btw i have nothing but respect for Apple

The ipod, iphone, ipad all improvements on old ideas by other companies just MUCH MUCH better.
music players were around before the ipod
touch screen phones before the iphone
tablets before the ipad
But Apple steered the world in the direction of these beautiful, fast, fluid, slick devices we have now

So if Google Voice is better than Siri no doubt Apple will come out swinging with something even better which is fine because Google wont let up and bring out another good thing and so the cycle of innovation and improvement continues... it only benefits us the consumer
Doesn't matter if you choose Apple, Google or Microsoft for your next device you're WINNING!

Oh, ok. I thought you could prove me wrong, but all I see here is some opinions being thrown around.

It might be better at somethings but when I try to get it to create an appointment, or launch an app, or set a reminder, or do anything other than search for something like I would do with siri - well I must be doing something wrong because all I get is a google search opening up in chrome?

You must be doing something wrong because.
Remind me to "take out the trash at 4"
Sets a reminder on my phone to take out the trash at 4

And you can't open apps by saying something like Open Winamp
But you can say: Play Justin Bieber and it will open your default media player and play some Justin Bieber

Just hang on Google Voice will only improve. In all honesty I think Google Now was just Google's way of saying "Hey Apple we can do that too now lets see who's faster, better, sleeker" both Siri and Gvoice are pretty much in their infancy and again the consumer will win because both will turn out amazing!

Create appointment is known not to work with Google voice i assume it will next update.

Same here. Setting appointments, playing music, navigation, voice texting/calling works seamlessly on my side. (I use voice texting ALL the time -works perfect when driving, with the phone mounted in its cradle and no hands free.)

I actually considered changing completely over to Apple recently, but it didn't take long to scrap that idea.

- OS X is flawed at the most basic level imo. There is a permanent bar along the top of the screen, then the top bar of whatever application you're using, and the dock along the bottom. This is a colossal waste of screen space. I wouldn't want to hide any of those elements because I switch between apps frequently.
- iOS is painful to use on iPhone coming from an S3 user. It feels claustrophobic, too simplistic and limited, the need to incorporate a 'back' function into the software at every stage, due to a lack of hardware, is annoying imo, I don't think the unchangeable iOS keyboard holds a candle to the mind blowing SwiftKey one, getting decent maps are a bother, constantly entering your password is highly intrusive and popular apps like WhatsApp seem horrible to me compared to their Android counterparts, and the SA store (at the time - maybe things have improved) was pathetic compared to what the US enjoys.
- I was very letdown by iWork. The best I can say about it is that it works, but I'll take Office 2010 thanks.
- I know that Apple hardware costs more, but it doesn't ease my mind when tech sites work out the gargantuan profit that Apple makes off of every product they sell. The software would have to be rainbows and pixie dust to justify spending money on an entry level Mac that could otherwise buy you a beast of a PC. I looked and I had an eager mind, but I couldn't convince myself that what I was seeing was impressive.

So that's my constructive criticism of Apple. I am a million times more comfortable with the Microsoft and Android experience. Windows has its fair share of shortcomings, but Object Desktop, TuneUp Utilities and Bitdefender fixes them in every material respect imo.

I'm a bit pressed for time today, so I'll just take this one. You switch apps frequently, so you usually have a couple open, right? Each windows (pre-Metro) app has its own top bar and its own menu bar. Start doing a few measurements and you will see that the Apple approach actually saves screen space as soon as you have more than three average-sized apps open. Yes, really, just do the math.

The dock icons can be resized to be absolutely tiny, then expand to any size you want on mouseover. Waste of screen space just is not a good reason to dislike OSX.

Are you forgetting about fullscreen mode? No bar, no menu bar, no dock (which, btw, is adjustable in size and location)

I use gestures to switch between apps more than I do the dock and quicksilver to launch everything.

I run all my apps full screen though (apart from iTunes which looks weird unless windowed). So the app gets all my screen's real estate and the ever-present taskbar fulfills the function of the OS X dock and right-hand side of the menu bar, while the application can do what it wants with its space (Firefox for example has no wasted space). Thanks for the feedback though. Maybe it's just my Windows habits that I need to get over to enjoy OS X. There was quite a lot I liked about the OS.

I think fullscreen mode would drive me up the wall. I need to see what's going on with my other apps and be able to click on their icons in a flash (and not hover my cursor for a bar to pitch up) to switch to them. I also found in Mountain Lion that it's not easy to tell which apps are open. There's some kind of nondescript squiggle under the icon.

Reading the responses in this thread, you would think the guy just got a disconnect and was labeled a SP from the cult of Scientology. You wouldn't think he was someone who was broadening his tech horizons. Wow... cultish is cultish.

Which responses in particular? The general snorts of derision you mean?

Scientologists would do the same. They would even say similar things. For instance, they would never accept any type of criticism. They would say the problem lies with the person, not the belief. They would then go on to attack that persons character to try kill the credibility of that person and what they are saying. They also say ex-scientologists are the worst. Call them heretics and everything. Oh well.

The article was histrionic bathetic attention-seeking rubbish. He's welcome to do as he likes. What else kind of response should there be?

Worst to me is articles that say 'I tried to like ____. I really, really did.' It's just awful writing. He's ragequit because they included an SD card in the Macbook Pro?? Seriously??
