Article: Did Cameron steal Avatar script?

A US judge ordered director James Cameron to hand over drafts of the screenplay for "Avatar" Wednesday, to lawyers for a man claiming he wrote the script on which the 3D blockbuster was based.

Eric Ryder is seeking compensation from Cameron and his production company Lightstorm Entertainment, claiming that the 2009 Oscar-nominated film is based on a story he wrote called "K.R.Z. 2068."

Diificult to comment without having more facts on the basis of the claim.

But there have been other claims, and they can't all be right.

The storyline is actually quite generic, with others claiming similarities to "Dances With Wolves", etc. I don't buy those, just BS.

very much so, avatar wasnt great because of the script, it was great because of the special effects.

*** WARNING SPOILERS ***
That was how I saw Avatar...
Saw it as Dances with Wolves in space.

As others have already said, the storyline was garbage and the special effects were what everyone went to see. I would feel ashamed as a writer to admit that I actually wrote Avatar.

Character development was non existent, the film is littered with this but as example:
1. I didn't care about Michelle Rodriguez's character or why she chose to abandon the battle
2. We are introduced to some additional science nerd characters in the beginning who are basically as anonymous and important as Star Trek redshirts... I forgot their names a few minutes after being introduced to them, that is how little they were explored, however they still serve some purpose with the slightly fatter redshirt being forced to stay at the military compound to spy for Scully and the thinner redshirt used to look like a giant nerd to show how unnerdy and cool and awesome and into not thinking about or being knowledgeable on stuff (which is so much cooler) Scully is.

I walked out of that film glossing over the horrific writing because I was so blown away by the effects. After that glow had worn off I realised I had watched the 3D special effects extravanganza equivalent of a Steven Seagal film in terms of the script.

Useless article when the reporter doesn't tell us what the script for K.R.Z. 2068 reads like.

Lemme see if I can be a better reporter. Google says ..

The K.R.Z. project was to be an "environmentally-themed 3-D epic about a corporation's colonization and plundering of a distant moon's lush and wondrous natural setting," he alleges in a complaint obtained by THR. The story allegedly included "a corporation spy," "anthropomorphic, organically created beings populating that moon," and a relaitonship between the spy and one of the beings that culminates in the spy becoming a leader of the group's revolt against the corporation's mining practices.

Ryder also says he came up with the idea of "self-contained robotic exterior suits which house a single human operator," which are featured in Avatar. The lawsuit claims that Ryder's reps had lots of meetings with Cameron's company back in '99, but then in 2002, the company said "no one would go see an environmentally themed feature length science fiction movie."

Sorta generic without more details but sounds like some elements could possibly have come from his script.

Bad Cameron bad!

White man's assault on a native race they deem to be inferior and the ensuing rape of their resources. In other words, European colonisation of the New World and Africa in 3D. Also the destruction of habitats and strip mining and the military-industrial complex play a part too.

That is how I saw the movie. Social commentary and 'I hate myself' sentiments.

Looked good though.

Me too. What made this movie a "Fantasy Film" was that the natives won.

The old Hollywood joke: There are only 6 scripts in Hollywood. Pick a movie, you will find another similar one made a few years back. Even worse, Hollywood tends to recycle franchises as well

That was pretty much it. Except you forgot the lame intergalactic furfag romance subplot that would be too cheesy for Bioware and a whole planet full of USB-compatible lifeforms.

I didn't think it looked that great either. I mean it's not ugly, don't get me wrong, it's just the Final Fantasy movie or Titan AE looked better, and actually had decent plots. If this other guy actually did write Avatar, he really has nothing to be proud of. If he claimed to have written The Godfather, things might have gotten interesting.

Oh for goodness sake Ryder Robotech and BattleTech beat you to it by over 3 fscking decades.

There was an episode of Suits about this. Very hard to prove they stole your idea when the studio can turn around and prove you stole all your ideas from previous literature. This is particularly true of a movie script as re-used as Avatar. I would be astonished if this guy won.
