Article: DVD censoring system critisized

A system where nasty scenes are omitted if the DVD is player is set to JUNIOR mode is great. In ADULT mode the whole movie can play. It's just a more refined form of the parental control function of DSTV where the whole program and not just a few scenes is blocked with the decoder in non-adult mode.

I would like such a device... and I don't see how it has anything to do with the copyright of the movie. Just freedom of choice. The motion picture guild can go hang. This is not America.

They are fighting it because it removes part of the movie, most movies are an art, you can just cut a few pieces out of a painting and expect people to understand it can you? its ruining their work, if you think the child is too young, don't let them watch it, period

They are fighting it because of copyright issues. They want a bigger cut of the pie. 99% of the films Hollywood churns out is NOT art. Come on.

Indeed. Hollywood exists to make profits. Capitalist to it's core which ironic considering it's infested with self described socialists :o

I'll let my kids watch whatever I want them to watch and If I want to skip or mute a scene I will. There is diddly squat that anybody can do about it. :D

I've done this manually - my kid loves Spiderman but some of the scenes with Doctor Octopus (eg hospital wake-up) was just too scary and voilent for him - so I spliced the movie and cut out all the stuff that I deemed to be too horrible for him - he still loves the movie - cutting out all the scary and gory stuff does not detract at all for him.

Similarly, for me daughter - she loves "My Best Friends Wedding" but the language is a bit adult in parts and there are one or two (for an adult, very minor) naked scenes - so guess what - snip, snip - once again, does not detract from the movie for her at all.

I think that this is a fantastic development - if it works, I'll buy one.

be sure to be there on your daughters wedding night to make sure that she doesn't see anything that might upset her.

At least she will be a virgin on her wedding night still... unlike some of the young girls I see getting dropped off at the mall on a Friday night.
