A Bloemfontein businessman has dribbled past Fifa's red tape on infringement of its intellectual property rights.
Rodos Ioannides pierced the heart of Fifa's copyright laws with a witty advert in his coffee shop in Mimosa Mall which has a logo similar to that of Fifa's.
Instead of Fifa's twin soccer balls bearing the world maps, Ioannides has used golf balls.
He has also substituted the letter A at the end of "Fifa" with an O, representing "First In First Out".
"No one can tell me not to sell anything for R20.10," he said.
Municipal officials demanded that it be removed. "They thought it said 'Fifa'. When I explained it to them, they had no answer," Ioannides said.
He also lashed out at Fifa for imposing their draconian ambush marketing laws.
That guy can still get in trouble... despite his advert not actually using any offending words or images, FIFA can just use their lawyers to argue that the advert causes "confusion" in the mind of the consumer. Besides... their lawyers can tie the guy up in court for months or years and make him waste millions defending a frivolous case. They just have to go "boo" at the guy and he will remove the advert. None of us have the kind of money that it takes to defend that kind of law suit. Better not to try and steal the big dog's bone. You will come short.
laugh it off vs SABmiller.....corporates have no chance cos of this precedent, well thats what i have heard
Just shows you how biased the legal system is, it favors those with time & money on their hands. Has very little to do with justice at the end of the day.
Really, wow well spotted![]()
