Article: First retail marijuana licenses issued

Washington state issued its first retail marijuana licenses on Monday in a series of middle-of-the-night emails alerting bleary-eyed pot-shop proprietors that they'll finally be able to open for business.

"We're pretty stoked," said John Evich, an investor in Bellingham's Top Shelf Cannabis, in a 2:30 a.m. Pacific time interview with The Associated Press. "We haven't had any sleep in a long time, but we're excited for the next step."

Would love to invest in some of these companies...

Same here, the first ones out are going to make a killing. By the time the other states wake up and legalise these companies will already be geared up and ready to take advantage of the new market.

PSG Capital might provide a way to invest? Can't think of any other way

Without a doubt..

The states will end up with large marijuana retailers, be interesting to seem them turn all corporate.

Doubtful, these seem like one-man shows/family businesses. It's not like they're listing on the NYSE.

I think one or two companies have listed or are gearing up for a listing. But you raise a good point. I wonder if there is a VC company a person could invest in that would provide exposure?

Basically imagine if you could invest in Starbucks when they started up. Coincedentally also just as some poky shop in Seattle.

Edit: Also started up by only 3 people.

This is something I think South Africa can do to get a nice chunk of income into the government coffers.

If they regulate/license/make legal, and pump that money straight into education and hospitals, it will benefit everyone.

Coincidently, I read a study last year that indicates that the only reason weed is a "gateway drug" is because you have to get it from a drug dealer, who will push other drugs on you to which you have easy access to. Take that out of the equation, no more gateway.

Plus regulate/tax/make legal prostitution. Australia has done very well in the last decade (so much so it's currency is better than USD)

So why not? I'm sure n****la could use another upgrade ;)
