Article: Green energy tariffs delayed

The approval of the Renewable Energy Feed-In Tariff (REFIT) has been delayed, the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA) said on Tuesday.

"NERSA today announced a delay in the timelines for the approval of the [REFIT] Review Tariff," said the regulator.

Awful. I was hoping to go into business with this. Truck loads of cash potential. It's a completely new market!

We're still a long time away from getting our renewable energy system on par with the rest of the world, but REFIT is a start nonetheless.

It's so much cheaper hooking up solar panels to the mains than using batteries and then maybe even getting a rebate for energy put back on the grid while being at work with only the fridge drawing power and using the rebate to pay for that used at night... One can only dream about that for now, but I'm hoping that future isn't too far away.

The only problem is if everyone did that Eskom will still need to have generation capacity to cope with the peak consumption at night time.
So yes, Eskom could scale down their electricity production during the day while solar works but come night time they need to be able to meet the current peak demand.
At the end of the day Eskom can't scale down on generation capacity unless people can maintain their own source of electricity at night.

As for rebates: I'd love that - I have 240m2 of North facing roof that is begging for solar panels.

Quick question, what does the program entail?

Does it basically use tax money to subsidise green business? Because the article says it will help generate jobs etc. but it doesn't say where those jobs come from. What I mean is, if all it does is divert money from going in one place, and providing those people with jobs, to another place then means you cannot establish whether or not this program creates more jobs than it kills.

It is standard propaganda for a state to show how much jobs are created by this program or that, and poeple usually by it as a good thing, without thinking about where the money came from, and who is NOT getting paid now that the funds have been diverted.

Just wanted to dispel and economic myth thats all...

If only we had competition in power production instead of a state monopoly...
