Article: Greenpeace slates SA nuclear plans

Environmental group Greenpeace has strongly condemned a "bizarre" decision by Cabinet to include 9600 MW of additional nuclear energy into South Africa's new energy plan.

"Apart from nuclear, the role that coal will play in South Africa's Integrated Resource Plan (IRP2010) will also increase, through two of the biggest coal-fired power stations in the world (Medupi and Kusile)," the group's nuclear expert, Rianne Teule, said in a statement on Friday.
 
Around 200 000 people die every year from coal-fired power plants. How many people die every year from nuclear power plants? That figure (and I'm rounding up here) is...zero. Yet these ignorant idiots rail against nuclear :rolleyes:

These are probably the same people who are scared to fly but will happily get into a car, which is millions of times more dangerous!

Greenpeace should shut the hell up and mind their own business. They're not the ones that will be sitting in the dark and cold when the next wave of rolling blackouts comes along. Renewable energy can't produce anywhere near the power we need and they won't for the foreseeable future.

Using Japan's misfortune to tar all nuclear plants with the same brush is pretty low, even by their standards.
 
So they protest both coal and nuclear powerstations. Maybe we should just smash all the powerstations to bits, get naked and go hug a few trees whilst singing Koombaya.
 
This is probably the only case where I wouldn't care if the government steamrollers public opinion and goes ahead. De public is de idiot in this one.
 
K Greenpeace, you provide the funding for something more green which will generate the same amount of electricity for us and we'll go ahead with that.

I suppose Al Gore will be the next to lecture us
 
In this instance, I say government should build as many nuclear stations it wants. Stuff those green piece idiots...

I read on news24 that the figure of deaths from nuclear power plants is 4 per year. The guy that died in Japan died in a crane accident, and I think it will count against it.
 
funny how support for Greenpeace has waned as people have realised what the real alternatives are.
You need to stay relevant, other green groups have actually embraced nuclear power as being more safe and clean on a statistical basis.

What do these Greenpeace maniacs hope to achieve by slagging nuclear and coal power generation, where nuclear is actually the cleanest...

I think this is what Greenpeace wants, or so it seems. If I was the government, my response would be to announce build a nuclear plant in each province, and then a second one as backup.

Nuclear power is safe, the fact that your reactor is damaged by an earthquake, tsunami or any other natural disaster has got nothing to do with nuclear energy.

Even with the earthquake, there is much less wrong that what most people understand. The news papers are all just blowing it out of proportion to get ratings.

Greenpeace are just a bunch of ignorant loud mouths who take advantage of the general publicly gullibility and ignorance.

They must have creamed themselves over the Japanese thing. All their other arguments against nuclear have become irrelevant. Now they're arguing that its not safe in the case of the mother of all earthquakes and a tsunami? Ja, SAs at high risk.
 
Nuclear energy is the answer. Just a pity that it will probably take ESCOM 10 years before the next one is up and running somewhere in SA. By that time we will be 20 years behind in supply AND electricity will already be 400% more expensive. We're ****ed either way.

The Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) alone takes longer than a year to complete. If we were like China who don't do EIA's we would probably have Medupi running by now and be on course to finish the entire power station upgrade by 2015 (slight exaggeration, I know).
 
Its a pity we cant use greenpeace members as nuclear fuel. That would solve two problems in one go.

That being said, they will burn nicely in coal power plants.
