A Bloemfontein man who set alight his wedding venue has apologised for the arson attack in court, Beeld newspaper reported on Friday.

Jean Greyling, 28, earlier admitted in the Bloemfontein Magistrate's Court to setting alight Emoya Estate in July.

Ah, the things we do for love. A South African bridegroom with a burning desire to defend his fiancés honour set fire to a wedding venue that cancelled his wedding booking.

The conference centre at the Emoya Estate, in Bloemfontein, South Africa, was burnt to the ground after Dean Greyling, 28, set fire to it on the 27th of July this year. Hours earlier, the wedding ceremony had been cancelled by the venue because the couple had not paid the required deposit.

Greyling gave himself up to the police after a week and confessed to the crime. He was found guilty of arson by the Bloemfontein Regional Court and will be sentenced next week.

"It broke my heart to see my future wife in tears the whole day," Greyling said in his plea explanation in court, The Volksblad newspaper reported. He also told the court that he did not expect the whole building to be destroyed.

The couple had to settle for a wedding at a local restaurant instead.

It seems that the couple have more than just a dislike for uncooperative wedding venues in common; they both have scant regard for the law. The bride, Lianne Meyer-Bekker, appeared before the same court earlier this week on fraud charges of R5,2 million ($523,000). Her case was postponed to October leaving just enough time for the [-]jailbirds[/-] lovebirds to have a honeymoon.
