Article: Murder in SA drops by 8.6%

Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa has released the National Crime Statistics for the past fiscal year announcing a significant decline in the murder rate for that period.

Any figure hard figures on these stats?

At last we're seeing a drop in fatal crime, this is very good news.

I see the Eastern Cape, Natal and Western Cape has the highest crime ratio per population.

The highest crime rates are unfortunately in townships like Khayelitsha, where criminals simply disappear into the intricate network of shacks.

I am sure an increased policy of reward (ratting out criminals for cash) will help bring this statistic down.

Yeah - but an increase in the population would result in a decrease in the per 100 000 number.

The 8.6% drop is not from the ration, but the total number of murders. In any case this is good news. I'm not a good mathematician, but if we continue with this percentage drop, how long would it take us to get to a 1000 murders per year

Any stats on rape, child abuse, sexual assaults etc?

An overseas friend who heard that crime was right down during the World Cup stated that all the crooks were watching the soccer, funny but could be true.

No time soon. But if we could decrease crime by 8.6 % each year you'd see us very quickly move into the absolutely world average middle ground for murder in about 5 years.

As it stands this puts us around 34 per 100 000 people for murders . Or 16 800 murders a year. At one stage we were closer to 70 per 100 000. It's the lowest we've ever been since we've kept and released accurate records of statistics per capita by a long way. But not nearly good enough. But it is indeed extremely positve and good news and a sign we are heading in the right direction.

Who's this "we" that is supposedly releasing accurate records of statistics?

Lol at TheRooster quote. I think all the stats are collected by statssa, but this might be the stats directly worked out by the police. But the stats are worked out from the police reports.

Hahahaha, this deputy commissioner is kind of smart, because from April 2010 untill now, murders have doubled (almost trippled) per month. See Beeld for those statistics. So, cutting the stats of in March was pretty smart, releasing the statistics this late... who knows... he should have added that from april it started going up again.

And maybe the Kommando's should come back?!?!

I'm glad that arrests have been made, but how many sucsessful convictions have been made? Thousands of cases get thrown out of court annually because of sloppy police work, lost dockets, etc, etc.

If we start having a great conviction rate, maybe I'll start smiling.
