The Gauteng Transport Department says at least 200 000 vehicles will have the new securitized aluminium number plates by the end of October.

Criminals will still be using fake number plates anyway. Or they'll steal somebody else's off and use these on a matching car instead.

yes, but any step in a more accountable, auditable process is better than one that isn't.
give them a chance - the fact that they have identified a problem and have proposed a solution doesn't mean that it will necessarily fail.
implementation still needs to decide that.
there never will be a perfect crime-fighting solution, but as long as you're making the risks higher than the rewards, it will be a less appealing alternative to the ethical route.
