COSATU STRUCTURES MUST ACCEPT NUMSA EXPULSION

All Cosatu affiliates must accept the decision to expel Numsa, Cosatu deputy general secretary Bheki Ntshalintshali said on Tuesday.

"The decision to expel Numsa is a CEC decision and is binding on all the structures of the federation and its leaders," he told reporters in Johannesburg.

"All [are] expected to observe it without exception."

Ntshalintshali said the Congress of SA Trade Unions (Cosatu) would convene meetings at all of its structural levels to explain the central executive committee's (CEC) decision.

The National Union of Metalworkers of SA (Numsa) was expelled from Cosatu at a special CEC meeting which ran into the early hours of Saturday morning.

Numsa made a presentation to the meeting defending itself against charges that the had union contravened Cosatu's constitution.

The metalworkers' union was expelled by 33 votes to 24.

Ntshalintshali said Numsa was advised that it could appeal against its expulsion, to Cosatu's national congress.

The next national congress is expected to be held next year.

He said the decision to oust Numsa was not taken lightly.

Cosatu general secretary Zwelinzima Vavi was not present, with spokesman Norman Mampane saying Vavi was "consulting his lawyers".

DLAMINI TAKES A SWIPE AT FORMER COSATU LEADERS

Cosatu president Sidumo Dlamini on Tuesday took a swipe at former leaders of the trade union federation who criticised it for expelling Numsa.

"Get off Cosatu, stay away from Cosatu," he said during a briefing in Johannesburg.

Dlamini was referring to former Cosatu general secretaries Mbhazima Shilowa and Jay Naidoo.

Both had taken to social networking site Twitter to express their disappointment with the Congress of SA Trade Unions decision to expel the National Union of Metalworkers of SA (Numsa).

In response to a comment that it was an end of an era and that Cosatu was dead, Dlamini said a new era was starting too.

"A new era is beginning too, we are here to lead the federation under these difficult times...."

Numsa was expelled at a special central executive committee (CEC) meeting which ran into the early hours of Saturday morning.

Cosatu deputy general secretary Bheki Ntshalintshali said all of the trade union federation's structures had to accept the decision to oust Numsa.

"The decision to expel Numsa is a CEC decision and is binding on all the structures of the federation and its leaders," he said.

"All [are] expected to observe it without exception."

On Monday seven unions -- the SA Commercial Clothing and Allied Workers' Union, the Communication Workers' Union, the SA State and Allied Workers' Union, the Public and Allied Workers Union of SA, the SA Football Players' Union, the Food and Allied Workers Union and the Democratic Nurses' Organisation of SA vowed to have the expulsion reversed.

They said they would also not participate in Cosatu's CEC meetings.

DLAMINI DECLINES TO COMMENT ON VAVI LETTER

Cosatu president Sidumo Dlamini on Wednesday declined to comment on a letter the trade union federation's general secretary Zwelinzima Vavi sent to him and affiliates regarding Numsa's expulsion.

Dlamini said the Congress of SA Trade Unions would issue a statement on the matter.

In the letter, addressed to Dlamini, affiliate general secretaries and provincial secretaries, Vavi said he was not able to defend a decision taken by the central executive committee to expel the National Union of Metalworkers of SA (Numsa).

Numsa was expelled at the Cosatu central executive committee (CEC) meeting which ran into the early hours of Saturday morning.

The union gave a presentation defending itself against charges of contravening Cosatu's constitution, but was ousted in the end by 33 votes to 24.

Vavi has been silent on Numsa's expulsion except for comments on social networking site Twitter.

Numsa was a strong ally and supporter of Vavi.

Vavi, in the letter, said the ousting of Numsa would have "momentous implications" for Cosatu.

"I am ready to admit that at times I have had to articulate views that contradicted my own, but always with the firm belief that they were arrived at democratically and therefore have had to serve as a disciplined cadre," he said.

"However, the magnitude of the decision that was taken by the special CEC is not only of historical importance but has momentous implications."

He said the future of workers was at stake.

"From that point of view I plead with you to understand that I will not be able to defend a decision that I honestly believe is contradicting and undermining organised workers and broader working class unity, a decision that will have momentous implications for years to come."

COSATU "IN TATTERS": VAVI

Cosatu general secretary Zwelinzima Vavi has admitted that the trade union federation is in trouble, The Star reported on Friday.

"Cosatu today is in tatters and absolutely in trouble. Factionalism is tearing it apart," Vavi was quoted as saying at a memorial service in Sasolburg on Thursday.

"When we see splintering, workers are set up against each other."

He said the cause of corruption in South Africa was because people had allowed individuals to wantonly abuse their powers.

"Let me tell you why. In our movement, we have allowed individuals to become more powerful than the organisation. They [the powerful] know how to manipulate us by praising themselves," he said.

"The supremacy of the organisation is now coming second to the supremacy of individuals and their factions."

Vavi was making his first public appearance since the expulsion of the National Union of Metalworkers of SA (Numsa) from the Congress of SA Trade Unions (Cosatu) on Saturday.

Cosatu deputy general secretary Bheki Ntshalintshali said Numsa would have to wait 10 months before appealing.

At its special congress in December, Numsa decided not to support the ANC in the May general elections, which went against Cosatu's policy.
