OK, that video is better than an eye witness report....wow, I'm actually speechless......

Why is it that after a stampede there are always odd shoes lying around? I know its off topic but I have seen it before, interesting....

If you read the updated news article it was because of the rain the previous night.

haha you're joking right? People left their shoes next to their "beds" and joined the stampede?
On a serious note, I have seen the left overs from a stampede and there were loads of shoes lying around.

i think the people lost their shoes in the stampede. When people are in close proximity they probably stand on each others shoes and then they come off.

Environment? Do you mean you can't buy breeding, manners, caring about others, granting somebody else their place under the sun?

Would it be wrong to refer to them as barbaric?

Taking their environment into consideration when they are trampling somebody to death to get to the front of a line, does it make it less barbaric?

When you refer to their background, probably disadvantaged, do you subscribe to the cliche that you can take them out of the bush.....? or am I making the wrong assumptions?

Stop being so ignorant, deaths at stampedes happen a lot more in 1st world countries than here.

My question was into relation of you thinking it so easy when you have all the luxuries in the world compared to the majority of people trying to get into UJ (of all places).
 
Mobs are barbaric... its got nothing to do with the people who are in them.

Put sane people in a situation like that with no organization or control and things will get ugly.

Those kids who are queuing there are desperate... they think that they can get in to university by doing this.
They didn't have the career guidance or parents who went to university, they just got an sms from a friend saying that they might be able to get in.

In the 21t century, technology such as mobile phones, email can be useful. Do they have mobile phones and the internet in South Africa ? They did when I left. But that was 4 years ago..........................

And since its happened before, why didnt they come with a plan to deal with it now ??? Instead, thousands storm the buildings. What's easy about that ?

I have nothing to do with your wiki quotes. I do not need to wiki to recognize wicket, cruel and unabated barbarism. Just a quick look at your quote most of these people were trying to get out, not to get in. Your quote make this behavior even worse.
Fleeing for your life is something totally different from trying to enroll at UJ.

These were all civilized, upstanding, leaders in commerce trying to get INTO soccer matches. All citizens of that leading light in the world, South Africa.

More than 98% of the people of your wiki quote were running AWAY to SAVE their lives.
Not to get into a soccer match or varsity.

None of your arguments held water. I will grant you all the time in the world and just watch how you dig yourself into the smelly stuff.

I see our super genius minister of higher education reckons he can fix this by having one centralized admissions service that intercedes between the students and all the tertiary institutions.
Couple of things spring to mind:
Centralized driving test bookings- unmitigated disaster
Transparency? There will be none. Expect to see racial quotas being controlled at the central service
Seems like someone also wants to create a nice cushy job for buddies to extort bribes for places for the desperate.
 
Why can't these people have the common sense to form a queue? Although the concept of queuing isn't really an African(geographic) thing.
 
Am I mistaken in saying this was not always how it worked? ( not meaning pre 94. Say the last 10 years) then the students rioted and this was opened to late entries to shush them?

They didn't riot for it. The old pre-merged Wits Tech used to accept students at the beginning of the year, but it was orderly and never in such large numbers. Wits Tech is now UJ.
 
Just shows you how messed up our education system has become, if people stupid enough to stampede like a pile of pachyderms and lazy enough to miss registrations by months are actually meeting the requirements to get into university...
