Article: One million tax returns submitted in record time

The South African Revenue Service (SARS) has reached the one million mark of income tax returns - just 22 days after the current tax season opened on July 1.

In a statement, SARS spokesperson Adrian Lackay said this morning, they received a total of 1 001 162 income tax returns for the 2012 tax season. Last year, it took five weeks to reach the 1 million mark.

I think it is also because people are struggling financially and need the refund more desperately then in the past.

I must say however I take my hat off to SARS which is probably the only one part of government working properly and improving each year.

I did my return yesterday evening so I am hoping I am not going to swallow my words...............

I think we should totally reflect our govt stellar efforts and only successfully submit 5 % of our tax ;)

The only reason why SARS works is because they have a profit incentive,

Sad but true. The money I got back from SARS already has about a Billion uses for, things I'd usually do with my monthly salary :(

True that..at work most ppl are doing efilling nd they want refunds rather being good citizens..I helped a lot of ppl to do efiling...next year,I will not do it Mahala....SARS is the best....one wonders why other departments are in such a mess but sars is doing so well every year....

As said before, it's because they have money to spend on contractors and the system being built and improved on (the whole modernisation initiative) is the source of their income. The higher ups know this and pushes quality and stability and they have the money to afford developers and contractors to achieve this.

Now compare the Department of Health, Education etc, their focus is not to make money and therefore the technology and platform that makes SARS so effective is not regarded as a priority and not being pursued.

Did my efiling on Monday night, money in my account this morning.

That is pretty good service.

I agree, SARS is the de facto standard when it comes to service delivery

Their ad campaign prompted me to go do mine, normally i forget and have to rush the last few days of the deadline .
