Article: Platinum strike cannot go on forever: Amcu leader

The strike in the platinum belt in the North West cannot go on forever, Amcu leader Joseph Mathunjwa said on Wednesday.

There was "ongoing engagement" with Mineral Resources Minister Ngoako Ramatlhodi to try and resolve the five-month-old mineworkers' strike.
 
"I don't want to speak for the companies. The minister has to meet with them and speak to them."

If the minister has to solve these issues... whats the point of the union?

Of course this strike can't go on forever, your members WILL have to give up at some point and accept the very reasonable offers that the mining houses have put on the table. It will still make their lives miserable for a few years while they try and work back the wages they've lost and the short term debt they've had to take out to survive.
 
The mines have done very well so far in holding out. I give it max 2 more months and the workers will give in. It's about time the Mines strong arm these damn unions a bit. If they get their way now, what will happen next year and the year after? Fk'em, let the employees suffer and they will return to work. Eventually they will see it's not working. Workers are already returning to work. More and more showing up at the mines daily. The mines must just hold out and stand firm.

On a simplistic front, this is exactly what the mines are doing. They're basically telling the Unions enough is enough. Pity we don't have a government that has the balls to put a stop to the unions though.
 
I wonder if these union leaders go to bed with a full stomach every night? Bet they do! The money they have lost cannot make-up the increase they want. Sad!

The sooner the workers wake up to how unions are generally negatively affecting the workers, the better.

True if the companies give in, the strike will move to gold, coal, construction, etc and it will be a never ending circle. That is why there was so much criticism of Lonmin for settling the way they did post Marikana it emboldened AMCU.
 
Eventually the strikers will die of starvation, so no it cannot carry on forever.

Lot's of sense there, it's something which should not be allowed to mature we will have these strikes all year round from all sectors with unrealistic demands
 
This is what worries me :

Earlier, Amcu President Joseph Mathunjwa said the latest round of talks "went well", while a newspaper reported the union had agreed to a government wage proposal.

Business Report newspaper, citing an unnamed source close to the government negotiating team, said Amcu had accepted a wage hike slightly less than its current "living wage" demand.

It doesn't seem as if anyone is actually paying attention to what the mines are saying, that these salary demands are not affordable.
 
The mines should offer the workers lesser and lesser each day they strike because of the money lost... They will soon come back to work.
 
With such high unemployment, be thankful and go back to work. How difficult can it be? Impossible to feel sorry for such a bunch of idiots.
