Playboy SA is to end its print run and go digital, it was reported on Wednesday.

Editor Charl du Plessis told The Times that the "hurdle of conservative readers" had proved too much for the magazine.

Du Plessis told the newspaper it was not that South Africans were conservative, but that they were hypocritical.

In his opinion, many other men and women's magazines often featured cruder material than Playboy SA, and for which they were not chastised.

You killed Playboy. I killed Playboy. We ALL killed Playboy.

"We're told from the consumer side that people don't want to be seen buying playboy. Digital is a more private space, and that is where publishing is heading anyway," he was quoted as saying.

Yep, pretty much the reason I never bought it on a regular basis. Digital is the way to go...

I bought one copy when Marge Simspon was in it (morbid curiosity to see how far they would go... not very) and the second was a freebie at Sexpo. Both of these went into the orange recycle back a couple of months ago during a clean up. Poor local content and meh chicks, don't know why people bother with magazines in this age of smart phones & tablets.

People dont buy it because you can get what you need for free on the internet.

Going digital defies the entire purpose of the existence of Playboy. It's about holding the physical thing in your hands. We can already get better pron on the interwebz.

Got a free signed issue (one of the playmates) at an event shortly after their launch. Had a skim through it, was disappointed, never felt the need to get another one.

They should just save everyone some time and give up on the digital idea too.

Playboy have 4 channels on Sky.

People don't want to be seen buying print media. Period.

It's not surprise really that Playboy would also go digital, considering it's much easier delivery and distribution mechanisms.

Yes, yes, yes - I am to blame, I always used to stare at it in CNA and end up walking out with the NAG magazine instead, every month amazingly.

The writing standard and the authors used to be cutting edge, much like Rolling Stone but that all went to hell in a handbasket in the late eighties. Launching in SA was the worst business decision. It's a Rubbish publication and I'm amazed they sold a single copy.
