Article: Potential cure for AIDS discovered: study

Don't worry, its extremely hard to contract the HIV virus via a single act of sex but easy when you routinely have sex multiple times with multiple different partners over a long period of time as huge numbers of South Africans do. Very very easy......
FTFY.

Wouldn't want your anti-science half truths being treated like they were at all relevant now would we... ;)

"The majority of people infected with HIV, if left untreated, may not progress to AIDS for 10-15 years or longer, according to the UN. Antiretroviral treatments can prolong this further still."

Is this correct?

The general figure thrown around is half the people get AIDS after 10 years of infection. However this is an average across the world. In Sub-Saharan African HIV progresses faster in general.

Progression depends on many factors such as: their CCR5 Status. That's a co-receptor on a CD4 cell which HIV uses to enter the CD4 cell. If it's a mutant there is some although not absolute protection as HIV at least initially cannot enter. HIV however can change to the so called CXCR4 receptor. CCR5 is a target of opportunity from medical intervention too and one way HIV may be "cured" in the future (and in one instance cure has been achieved). There are drugs which block this receptor too. CCR5 mutations are uncommon in Africa but common in Europe.

There is a group of people called Long Term Non Progressors. However it is now thought that even these people will benefit from anti-retroviral treatment, as HIV infection also has very subtle negative effects which are now coming out of the woodwork, for example it's a risk factor for heart attacks and stroke, even when one is not in an advanced stage.

Is it just me or is there a news headline like this once a month?

Wonder why they still working on a cure whilst every knowledgeable person knows it's there already.
Pharmaceutical companies make more from 'suppressing' the disease
