Article: Potential cure for AIDS discovered: study

Awesome stuff! Even if you remain HIV positive

They should stop wasting time and money for a cure. If people stop f-ing around and return to morality then aids will be gone in a few years.

Good news!

But like the article says: HIV is forever. At least for now (even if this works).

Once you are infected the virus spreads everywhere and lies dormant.

... could spell an end to onerous multiple drug regimes for HIV patients, meaning better quality of life and lower costs to individuals and governments.
Pharmaceutical companies won't like this.

I'm waiting for news of this scientist's mysterious death to be published quite soon.

LOL. 7 replies in and we already have conspiracy theories and someone else trolling for religious attention. Keep up the good work...

Don't worry, its extremely hard to contract the HIV virus via sex. Very very hard......

I wonder how this would affect the transmission of the virus? Surely the statistical chance of getting infected would decrease if the spread of the virus (in the carrier) is inhibited.

If so, then this might actually be a cure -- not in the common sense of the word, but rather that infections will become rare instead of commonplace.

I know... long-long-way-away-optimism. :D

So what are these "22 opportunistic infections or cancers related to HIV." ?

I've heard of some people that died from so called "cough" "cough" TB related /lung related infections - so those are one of the infections related to HIV??

There are strategies to affect HIV cure. The viral RNA (DNA) spreads to many cell types but much of it then lies dormant or is broken (non functional) virus. One way is to try to get the virus, which can replicate to replicate- that allows the virus to kill the cells in which it lies. Then one can nuke the bone marrow and kill off all CD4 cells - every single one - before doing a bone marrow transplant from a related donor who is HIV neg. This has actually occurred with one patient and was, it is thought, cured off HIV.
The mortality rate however of bone marrow transplantation is about 25% while living with ARVs carries a far lower sickness/death risk.
