Article: Racism in schools under fire

Gauteng premier David Makhura was on Tuesday briefed on discrimination in the province's schools.

"We condemn racism and all other forms of discrimination. Such incidents are a threat to our social cohesion agenda and will not be tolerated in this democratic dispensation," Makhura said in a statement.

Maybe pupils' behaviour should also be geared towards social cohesion. If you act like an animal, how can you be accepted in a civilised society.

One thing though, racism is an ugly side to society, however:

"We will be working very closely with institutions such as the Human Rights Commission and the civil society to eradicate this scourge," Makhura said.

Great, no issue.

Then why do we have racial quotas, now I'm speaking about this on merit, why is 'positive discrimination' acceptable?

and...

What is our social cohesion agenda exactly, we don't even have proper education which is one role therein???

Is it just me or does RPM's avatar look like you now?

I listened to calls on 702 the other day and was stunned about some of the reactions from callers. Perhaps I misunderstood the issue, but to me it sounded like schools offered per grade a few dedicated classes for afrikaans and a few for english. The english classes filled up and people started placing non-afrikaans-speaking kids into afrikaans classes and then complained that those classes only cater for "whites".

At my kid's school two years ago, parents had a huge fight over which african language should be picked as the 3rd language and a fight ensued over Xhosa vs Zulu. So Xhosa it was, but the teacher was incapable of teaching it and even the Xhosa kids failed (funny enough, my kid had higher marks than his african peers) - come term 3, the school ditched the class altogether.

I think people should stop mixing up language with culture and make a language choice racist - at least that was my take out from the 702 calls. For what it's worth, the whole racism issue is not just a South African problem - I stumbled across this campaign in France:

If the ANC government wanted to create equality and improved the prospects of all children, they should have really spent more thought and time in the last 20 years on building a proper education system. To me even the previously "elite" private schools have become very mediocre and standards have dropped where it is perfectly acceptable to have 30-40% pass marks - people are essentially breeding idiots.

Schools should be geared to cater for the common language of the area and English. There is always going to be someone of a different language to what the mainstream has but to best accommodate they need to use the most popular language to aid understanding but steer everyone in the country towards trying to use English as the mainstream choice of communication. This would work well if it was common place for students from a very young age and would allow them to communicate it the preferred business language of the world.

Secondly parents should be doing their part to make sure their kid(s) understands the pay off of working hard and getting good marks. This should be enforced in a positive way so the kid thinks well of themselves and gives them the confidence to achieve. I know this is hard for some people and their backgrounds etc but even a little help, especially earlier on can go a long way.

English and Afrikaans are beautiful languages. If kids want to be taught their mother tongue, then I have no gripe with that. They should just send their kids to schools that offer those languages.

Racism in schools condemned sounds so bland compared to Racism in schools under fire.

Mmmmmmm just like BEE and "forcing" companies to favour certain races like lending etc.

The article says nothing about the scope of racism in schools , just that there is a report and the premier condemns racism.

The ANC are genius at creating racial tension. Mention racism, condemn it and you have the perception that it's a major issue.

Just wondering where AA, BEE fit into racism. Probably not because it benefits blacks only...............................
Bigots!!!

Racism will continue to be an issue, because it is the ANC's #1 talking-point when campaigning for votes.

They have no incentive to ever make it a non-issue.
