Article: Racist tweet strikes again at Olympics

Yeah but its racist as the word he used is slang for people with down syndrome, referring to the way they look. That is racist.

You are basically saying its an insult to be likened to someone with Downs Syndrome. I know some Downs Syndrome kids.

I find it insulting that someone would feel insulted because they are likened to someone with Downs Syndrome. Makes me sick.

That word "racist" is like the in thing and people get brownie points whenever they get to accuse someone of it.

I guess it will be racist too if some foreigner said that South Africans are ****ing retards because they vote for the ANC every election and expect change.

I wouldn't really say it's racist, more unsportsman like than anything else.

This poor footballer, must've thought the Olympics were a FIFA/UEFA sanctioned event, where racism is tolerated

Translated he said this "I'm going to beat up every Korean. Go on – burn yourselves! Bunch of mongoloids."

LOL at white people doing their best to defend this racist and downplay his racism.

Lol @ over-PC dumb@sses seeing a racist hiding behind every door.

good grief! anyone would swear McCarthyism was re-incarnating as The First White Scare

Racist or not it is in very poor taste and not in the spirit of the competition. I really don't think that someone that makes those sorts of comments about other competing nations belongs in the olympics. If you aren't going to conduct yourself with respect then you don't deserve to represent your country. Go home.

Er, South Korea is a country, not a race...

Irrelevant. Being derogatory about an entire group of people is racist.

Racism and racial discrimination are often used to describe discrimination on an ethnic or cultural basis, independent of whether these differences are described as racial. According to the United Nations convention, there is no distinction between the terms racial discrimination and ethnic discrimination, and superiority based on racial differentiation is scientifically false, morally condemnable, socially unjust and dangerous, and that there is no justification for racial discrimination, in theory or in practice, anywhere.[7]

the term "racial discrimination" shall mean any distinction, exclusion, restriction, or preference based on race, colour, descent, or national or ethnic origin that has the purpose or effect of nullifying or impairing the recognition, enjoyment or exercise, on an equal footing, of human rights and fundamental freedoms in the political, economic, social, cultural or any other field of public life.[21]

This definition does not make any difference between discrimination based on ethnicity and race, in part because the distinction between the two remains debatable among anthropologists.[22] Similarly, in British law the phrase racial group means "any group of people who are defined by reference to their race, colour, nationality (including citizenship) or ethnic or national origin".

So yes, it is a textbook example of racism...

They have one of the highest IQ averages in the world.
It's about as racist as telling jews they suck at making money.
Generalising about any group in a derogatory or condescending way because you think you are superior is racist.
Racism is never true in the real world so your argument is pointless.

LOL at UWS suggesting that white people defend racists. That's just racist man.

Logically it makes no sense. By your definition, I can define a group of people by any attribute, say something negative about them and it's racist.

All asians are stupid - racist
All cape townians are hippis - racist
That suburb is full of morons - racist
That school is full of **** - racist
Everyone in that street is a drug lord - racist
That family is pathetic - racist
Everyone in that house is stupid - racist
You are an embarrassment to the human race - not racist.

That suburb is full of morons - Not racist - you are not defining a specific group of people as morons

Well yes, if you'd looked at the context of my definition it would be clearer. But fair enough, I'll revise it:

Being derogatory about an entire group of people who are defined by reference to their race, colour, nationality (including citizenship) or ethnic or national origin is racist...

This covers the idiotic tweet in question...

So again, calling South Africans retards is racists towards all the whites, blacks (zulu, xhosa ...all of them), coloureds, Indians, Chinese, Japanese and all the other races we find here in South Africa?

So, via that definition, xenophobia is actually a sub-category of racism.

Exactly. Yes, saying 'South Africans are retards" is racist (according to the UN at any rate). It's a derogatory towards an entire group of people based on their nationality. If someone treated you like a moron because you're South African, of course that's racist! I actually had that in the UK a few years ago, these English guys were playing 'Magic' the card game - they had been really weird to me anyway but I asked if I could join the game and was told, no, it's too complicated, you south africans wouldn't be able to understand it (used those words)! The term racist has come to have a much broader meaning than it originally had. Like all words, meanings evolve.

IMHO it is direct racism, given a fancy selective name by the ANC cohort's to ease the blow of reality. ;)
