Article: Richard Branson had plans to remove Mugabe

Virgin Group boss Richard Branson had plans to bankroll a diplomatic move aimed at persuading Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe to step down, according to a cable published by WikiLeaks. According to the U.S. Embassy cable, Branson agreed to fund the plan, which was proposed by former Zimbabwean Information Minister Jonathan Moyo in July 2007.

The cable, signed by Ambassador Eric Bost, said Branson was due to hold a secret meeting with Nelson Mandela and other African statesmen in Johannesburg to discuss the move.

Wait what. The excuse for Mandela's silence on all the crap going on here and with our northern neighbour was that he was "retired".

That meeting would be a who's who of old Mugabe comrades and fanboys. Hell even old pal Jimmy Carter was to be involved

The mooted meeting reads like a who's who of African politics. Mandela, the former presidents Sam Nujoma (Namibia), Kenneth Kaunda (Zambia), Jerry Rawlings (Ghana), Joaquim Chissano (Mozambique), Daniel arap Moi (Kenya) and Ketumile Masire (Botswana) reportedly agreed to participate, the cable states, as did the ex-UN secretary-general Kofi Annan.

The former US president Jimmy Carter was also due to be in Johannesburg and to meet the group, although "it is not clear if he will be involved in the Zimbabwe discussion".

Then again maybe not :o

Surely there must cheaper ways to get rid off Mugabe. The Indians and the Chinese should have got involved.

What? He was going to attempt to "buy out" Mugarbage? Haha! You know what I think may have been the result? I reckon maybe, just maybe, Mugabe would have taken the money gladly and agreed to this plan and then at the last minute he would say something like...Begone! We do nooot need you Breeteesh meddling weeth owah affehs!

He should have rather funded a militia to go in there and tear his regime a new one.

Seems it was about as successful as all his other schemes, like the balloon trips.
