Article: Robert De Niro white first lady joke does not go down well

Robert De Niro says he meant no offense when he joked at a presidential fundraiser featuring Michelle Obama that America might not be ready for a white first lady.

"My remarks, although spoken with satirical jest, were not meant to offend or embarrass anyone - especially the first lady," De Niro said in a statement.

If people are offended by this, then I'm very disappointed in them. This joke was nowhere near racist.

No ... more than disappointed. Disgusted. People are just looking for confrontation anywhere and everywhere.

It's hilarious especially considering that de Niro's first lady is black too.

i wonder what would have happened if the current first lady was white and he said America was not ready for a black first lady?

Well.... it did not happen so it is pointless to open that line of debate in this thread. Start another thread?

I could not agree more. PC is being taken too far in some instances.

That's life in the US. People get offended at the drop of a hat. Actually happen here now, too.

But here in South Africa people have got more of an argument (even if there are no reason) to be racist ...

Not in America.
