Article: SA rugby too white: former coach

By making the Springbok team too white, black South Africans were being alienated from the sport and the team, which was divisive for the country, former Springbok coach Peter de Villiers said in an internet radio interview.

"We have to know what country we're living in, and at the moment we're turning a lot of black people against us by making the team white," he told Ballz Radio earlier this week.

Says the hypocrite who only had 3 players of color in his side for the RWC Quarter Final against Australia.

When you have nothing of any real use to add and have yourself become irrelevant ... just pull the race card to get yourself back in the spotlight

Wonder how many players of colour Cheeky Watson's Southern Spears will have for next years Super Rugby.
He said he wanted to show the country that black players can play rugby.
But then he goes and contract a number of white players.
Guess he knows their arses will get kicked next year.

It is too white but good luck convincing black, coloured and indian youth to take up rugby

What all these tools fail to realize is that in a game like rugby "size counts". Sure the odd exception exists, but generally speaking you need to be a big, strong, fast stuk vleis if you want to compete at even club level.
Unfortunately in ZA we don't have enough big, fast, melanin enhanced individuals who are passionate and dedicated enough to make it at the professional levels required by international rugby... blame it on genetics, blame it on lack of early nutrition ... whatever .... at the end of the day it's got f0kkol to do with being fair ... that's just what the game dictates

Eish , He might have a point but he really has no right saying it. Having said that , I dont think Meyer selections smacks of racism , he just favors the bulls players over everyone else. If he is racist explain how the Nik Naks man is picked ahead of Pat Lambie ?

Sour grapes, now trying some Malema tactics.

Go back to the car park idiot.

Lol yes because all those guys were born huge and strong. None of them started working out to get big.

It's simple, the fact is that soccer is more popular with blacks. In soccer you need to be fast and have endurance not be huge and strong. Soccer and rugby are not crossover sports so if a black teen got exposed to rugby and loved it more than soccer he would need time to catch up. It's completely possible though and that black teen might even surpass his team-mates.

Now the question is not capability but rather why are less blacks interested? Culture sure but maybe they also feel excluded by a lack of representation. This then makes less black rugby players and a cycle is formed. Overall though just watch a Super 15 game in public and you'll see blacks and whites yelling at the tv with equal passion.

Go read what I typed again, I never said that. What I said was that size counts in rugby

Indeed.... unfortunately, when it comes to rugby, "size still counts". You want your team to compete you need those players. Whatever the reason is that there is supposedly less interest amongst blacks, player size is still a major factor in the game that cannot be denied. Nothing stopping anyone from working out to get big, but you will need to do this if you want to make it to professional level
Do you have any idea what level of promotion and development goes on at school level when it comes to black players with talent ?(and I loosely include size and speed in my definition of talent here). I can tell you now, that any non-white kid will have bursaries thrown at them if they look like they have a chance of competing at schoolboy first team level

I think he is talking about the guys like Aplon etc. whom are classified as "black" that's being left out of the team?
Maybe not?

I think there are quite a few (school boy) black players coming through at the moment though.
Maybe we will start seeing them in provincial/ super rugby teams in the next 2-4 years.

If you are good enough you should play - that cuts both ways.
This rubbish of selecting players only because of BEE or whatever is crap!
If the guy is of whatever colour and is better than the next guy, then by all means pick him.

In all honesty, it is less about culture and more about class. Rugby is a middle class sport. Kids of any colour, that go to a decent high school, will be exposed to rugby. The poor kids are generally exposed to soccer. So the divide is more on middle class and poor townships, than strictly on culture.
With more black kids going to more reputable high schools, there are far more of them playing rugby and far more of them supporting rugby than ever before.

Another factor that alienates people is that rugby has far more rules than soccer. Unless you sit and read a rules book, you would need a few months of watching games with people that actually know the rules and are willing to answer your questions as to why the ref blew at that moment.
