The sanctions against suspended ANC Youth League president Julius Malema will only take effect after mitigation, SABC radio news reported on Sunday.

"You will know that the NDCA [national disciplinary committee of appeal] said that they have a chance to go and mitigate so until such mitigation has taken place the sanctions will not kick in," ANC spokesman Jackson Mthembu told the SABC.

"The fact that this hearing upheld the guilty verdict means that his suspended sentence from 2010 kicks in now," a senior ANC official confirmed to the Sunday Times.
