Article: Selebi appeal fails

Once convicted the State had a choice (upfront) and decided to decline his request to fund the appeal.

As of this morning he is now in deep financial trouble as well!

I'm pretty sure his lawyers would not have defended him without payment ?

:D I know, does not sound right!! (Sorry, Dominic, Sam!)

Free publicity, media exposure, etc. to generate future earnings...

It would definitely be good advertising... I mean if you were looking for a lawyer, you'd think, "If they can get that piece of **** off, this should be no problem for those guys."

If not for the fact that.... they lost. ;)

Yes, well they didn't know that beforehand. The lawyers probably thought, like most of us, that Selebi would get off scott free. In fact he very well still might.

Saw him on the news now parking in the ambulance in a "critical but stable condition" with a real "bah! foiled!" look about him.

Shall we have a whip around, say the left over coins from when you return from overseas, etc? That's about my limit

Selebi to dig deep

December 2 2011 at 08:56pm

Former national police commissioner Jackie Selebi has to pay the State back for all his legal fees, the department of justice said on Friday.

“We are going to start calculating the actual amount owing and communicate with Mr Selebi through his lawyers,” department spokesman Tlali Tlali said.

When asked what would happen if Selebi could not pay back the money, Tlali said: “We will follow normal debt recovery processes.”

Selebi asked the State to assist him in carrying the cost of his legal fees during his corruption trial.

In a pre-trial agreement with the State, he agreed to pay back all the costs if he lost his case
.

So the state did pay his legal expenses ?
