no, only if you profit financially from it.

If I buy something... a CD, a DVD, a bicycle... it is my prerogative if I want to share it with a friend. I bought it... it is within my rights to decide what to do with it.

Sharing, is caring.
However selling it on as if you are the owner, is just plain unethical :p

Does it matter what you think... It falls under the broader law of copyright infringements in an case. You gonna go make yourself a bar of soap and call it Dove? I don't think so...

But that's not illegal. If you make a bar of soap and call it DOVE and Lever or whoever it is who owns that trademark does not sue or prevent you from doing so, the Police or prosecutor's office will not lift a finger to stop you.

Media companies should not have the right to monitor what someone else does on their internet connection. What gives them that special right. If they get that right then we all may as well have the right to do monitor other peoples' connections.

:) Saw this after I wrote it. The world is the way it is. don't have the patience to get into this right now ....

Well selling it on is definitely unethical. But there is another aspect we cannot forget.
And that's denying the artist income by distributing their work for free.
so: If you like it, support the artists by paying for it.

This morning my wife tried to buy digital music from amazon.co.uk, using a UK credit card. It said we were in the wrong geographic location. I guess it saw an IP address. Anyway, she can't find the music here. Digitally, or otherwise. The only option now is to pirate it.

What album are you trying to get?

I don't actually know. I'll have to get the details from her later and poke around to see if I can find it.

I think that Ars article is true for us. We pirate some music. We prefer not to. But we also buy far more music than anyone else we know. Same for DVDs of television series. For example, I've pirate the whole of the current season of Greys Anatomy, because it's not available on DVD. As soon as it is, I'll buy it and delete the files from my NAS. I've done this for every season, and for several shows.

No. Copyright is special right given to creators of ideas to have exclusive use of those rights for a limited period. Sadly the industry has abused this right and extended their period of exclusive use for far longer that was originally intended.

Secondly, there are matters of civil law and criminal law. Trademark, patent and copyright issues are usually issues of civil law. It's a pity the industry confuses everything purposefully by putting FBI notices on DVDs and claiming copyright infringement is the same as stealing - which it's not.

You could buy the services of a UK based proxy. Thank the media industry.

I already got a strange look when I tried to explain to the wife about why she didn;t really need the free Amazon download helper application, because it'll just stick the .mp3s in her iTunes folder and not on the NAS as they should be. She'll definately leave the room if I try to get her to use a proxy :)

File sharing is not analogous to making your own bar of soap and calling it Dove. It's analagous to sharing a bar of soap.

(Only less icky.)

The Band Called Arctic Monkeys was launched by their music being shared over p2p networks

Thing is if you buys a CD and you lend that CD to a buddy you cannot listen to it... and there is nothing wrong with doing that as you paid for 1 copy of the material and only 1 is being used. But if you copy a mp3 and give it to a friend you are violating copyrights as there are now 2 copies of the material. So it is not the same as sharing the soap as you create a whole new bar of soap lol not splitting it in half that would have been fine lol..

No, Stupid people will always waste their money on this. Even in the presence of piracy artists continue to make loads of money.

I agree that no one should make money from the sharing, though.
