Steve Hofmeyr pleads guilty to driving at 162km/h

Johannesburg - Afrikaans singer Steve Hofmeyr on Tuesday pleaded guilty to a charge of speeding - his second such offence since January last year.

Hofmeyr made a low-key appearance in the Lenasia Magistrate's Court, looking calm as he walked into the courtroom shortly before his appearance, wearing a black cap and a pair of glasses.

He took the cap off inside the court after he was called to the stand by his full names, Stefanus Johannes Hofmeyr.

Hofmeyr pleaded guilty to driving at 162km per hour in a 120km/h zone.

He told the court in a statement read out by his lawyer that he had five dependents - his wife and four other people - and that he earned between R60 000 and R70 000 per month before deductions.

Hofmeyr said he was driving a blue Audi when he broke the speed limit, but added it was not his car and he was not used to driving it when the infringement occurred.

He also said it was on a Sunday afternoon and the road was not busy.

Hofmeyr said he could afford to pay a R5 000 fine, but the court gave him a R2 000 fine, or the option of four months in jail. He opted to pay the fine.

When Hofmeyr left the courtroom, he had a brief conversation with a court officer. When they turned around and spotted a News24 journalist, he quickly put his black cap back on and slipped into a side passage. His lawyers later left the court building without him. He used a back entrance to leave.

A court official would not allow pictures inside the courtroom.

Last year, Hofmeyr was fined R10 000 for speeding after pleading guilty in the Bronkhorstspruit Magistrate's Court.

At the time, he told the SABC he was happy to pay the fine.

"We are happy with the fine, what the law says, we are going with. It's a R10 000 fine and that's basically my honeymoon budget," he said.

"My job here is not to break the law. I march against that most of the time. I don't want to be part of that problem, I want to be part of the solution," Hofmeyr reportedly said.

This is another speeding case againt him and not the 2013 one
 
R2000 for 167 Kph that would be what close to 180 Kph on your ODO ?

At what speed to they arrest you ? 160 ?

I reckon majority of speed trapping is done so illegally in the first place . Unfortunately the way fines are dished out, you have little chance of proving your innocence because you don't even know about being trapped until you receive a love letter with your photo in the post.

Perfect example is the illegal unmanned cameras set up between woodmead and grayston. Send a letter to the prosecutor when you get the fine requesting documentation of the operator and device ; include a photo of the unmanned camera and see how quickly the fine gets quashed. Problem is , 9 times out of 10 you wouldn't even know you had been trapped

Those rarely go anywhere.

I bet this is a case of being caught in the act instead, otherwise there wouldn't be this drama.

Why you'd need a lawyer for such a low speed is beyond me as well.

Depends on the car. Some might be perfectly accurate at that particular speed.

Also unlikely it would be out by that much, but a safe overestimation.
