Article: Teachers should be tested: Ramaphosa

ANC deputy president Cyril Ramaphosa believes that competency tests should be reinstated for teachers, the City Press Online reported.

According to the report on Wednesday, Ramaphosa said that teaching would only improve if teachers were benchmarked through the controversial assessments.
 
As if the South African government would really ever do this again..... the tests were scraped for a reason. Cyril needs to go speak to Zuma before making these comments publicly.
 
You mean that teachers currently don't have competency tests!!! - the mind boggles.
 
Competency test for all civil servants, teachers, government hospitals and parastatal companies are required.

Question is, will the tester be competent?

I have friends with kids in grade 8. It is exam time. Some of the kids are not going to make the year.
The parents went to the school to ask what to do to help the kids ( extra classes and so on) the school said:

yes that would help but don't worry we will help them pass. :wtf:

When ask what they were saying the teachers said they will adjust the marks to help them pass the subjects that can make them not pass. ( Math and languages or 4/3 other subjects)

Examinations are suppose to be a competency test... but all they do is pass you until grade 12 and then let you fail and have you deal with yourself or make you the state's problem ( welfare)

Agreed, why just stop at teachers? Government should be help to operational standards like companies are. Sort of like an ISO 9001 for civil servant aptitude
 
Wow, as noted by House this idea did not float with the unions already and Zuma scrapped the idea with it never to be brought up again. Can't believe "Mr Unions" is the one brining it up now, wow he really isn't even in the same ballpark with them (unions) any more - can you see SADTU or whatever the acronym is EVER allowing this? Ever ever?

I really like the idea, the don't have to go overboard, just make sure there is a general level being maintained and build a culture of continual learning back in to the teaching profession again.

To be honest it would be nice if they could get a nice collaboration setup where good lesson plans, worksheets and so forth can kind of be voted up and shared internally along with this kind of initiative.

I'm going to sound ancient.. :o
But a few years ago, if you were not scared of your parents at least you were shyte scared of being humiliated and having to do a year again... In the same school.
At least that made you study a bit harder.
Now all kids know about this practice and they just have the attitude, oh well they will pass me.
 
Bring back the rottang to discipline these hooligans in school and you'll find automatic adjustment in any incompetencies, if there were any.
Mr. Bidvest should be more concerned as to why so many teachers are LEAVING the profession. Another example of misplaced priorities...

Yip, was the same when I was at school. However, I don't think we should generalise and think all pupils think it's okay to scrape the bottom of the barrel. Plenty will still feel very humiliated by the prospect.

Here's a novel idea no-one post-apartheid has ever thought of before .. why don't you make sure of their qualifications before you employ them? Oh yeah, BEE quotas ..
 
Cyril, please do the cabinet ministers as well. You will find the failure rate lower than the Matric average in the Eastern Cape!
Least the students dont sleep in class like Parliment!
