Article: The pill for 12 year olds: ANCYL

The ANCYL has proposed that the government give contraception to girls as young as 12 to stop teenage pregnancies, City Press reported on Sunday.

The league supports the “mandatory initiation into contraception for all adolescent girls from the age of 12 to curb teenage pregnancy”, according to the organisation's education and health discussion paper for its 24th national congress in June.
 
Great.. lets give all our 12yr olds even MORE reason to think its ok to sleep around.

I understand the logic behind giving them the pill, but nothing is forcing them to actually TAKE the pill...

And girls of 12? What the hell?!

Act like uncontrollable animals, we could care less and here take this pill to stop yourselves getting knocked up. AIDS? STDS? We don't think about such uncouth things, we are the youth league!

some girls are developed by then, but not all are.

(put aside the general long term effects as known in older girls & ladies for now)

girls who's hormones are not fully developed will be negatively effected by adding hormones to their system.

Providing contraceptives to 12 year olds should be illegal considering it's illegal to have sex under 16.....

What is your solution to the problem then?

Why would AIDS be a problem? Just pop some meds and you'll be fine is the message now.

My solution? Voluntary sterilization for anyone that votes ANC. :p

****ed if I know, to be honest...

So much needs to change, and the focus has to be on dealing with poverty, education and joblessness... all things that the ruling party don't seem to gice the slightest toss about. So yeah.

Just for clarification, no reason why the pill should not be accessible to 12 year olds, as denying contraception to kids who frankly, can't be stopped, is silly.

It's the forced nature of the suggestion that is very distasteful and wrong. Also, the issue of STD's is a real one and is not addressed by this solution at all.

The only thing to really help in this situation is education. Forcing kids to take a pill is tacitly condoning their behaviour (and I'm sorry, as liberal as I might be, 12 year olds should be playing with ****ing colouring in books or something, not ****ing), and in a way that will only replace one problem (pregnancy) for another (potential illness).

You have to embrace the ANC marketing machine steam-rolling ahead throwing caution in the wind... come now people. Wake the F CK up... they're highlighting these problems because that is what people want to hear.

It's pretty easy to look good when you have a track record of being ignorant to any and ALL issues by just going "Oh hey, yes, we are going to do this because it is a problem... VIVA"

I know several people still waiting for their promised RDP houses... 2011 vs 1998... mmmm let me think... NO they haven't thought this through. NO their supporters don't think as far as the average South African would. They just see it as the ANC actually doing something to benefit their country...

Education has obviously failed. I'm 31 this year and I have had sex education in a public class C school since the 1990's already and we've had several talks about AIDS, pregnancy and basically the **** I wish I didn't know about women... that's a good 13 years ago since I matriculated and a good 16 years ago that they started with the sex-ed classes, not because they wanted to but because it was government mandate.

Now if they were educated do you think they'd make these mistakes?
 
The ANCYL is correct and I agree fully with their reason. If this is implemented though, it should run concurrently with education about teenage pregnancy. Maybe show teenagers what life will be like if they fall pregnant at this early age. It will also help if child grant monthly amounts are decreased, sort of a disincentive for people not to have kids. An educational campaign to teach poor people that it is wrong to have a lot of kids if one can't afford to feed them will work. The end game would be a total abolishing of child grants since it is highly unsustainable.
 
solution stop all child support grants and also old age pension(sick lam and lazy pension) young girls that have children put them to work in jobs like cleaning ect (low education jobs). why must people get old age pension from the state when others have saved all there lives for retirement. others must be put to work too.

young girls who s... around seem to like it put them to work in w...houses to make money to feed there children and the young guys who child it is must be sterizel so he does not do it again.
