Article: Top cop appointment an insult: SAPU

The appointment of a civilian as police commissioner is an insult to the country's police force, the SA Policing Union (Sapu) said on Wednesday.

"We were of the opinion that the president would [have] learnt that non-police officers have not made any good national police commissioners," Sapu general secretary Oscar Skommere said in a statement.

As if a union leader knows anything about anything.

Well they do sort-of have a point. Imagine if you were a qualified, experienced individual who spent 20 years rising up the ranks of a company - only to have somebody with no prior experience appointed as CEO.

Well, the fact that they keep appointing civilians stinks of politics so I tend to agree.

Depends if he has experience as a CEO...
Remember the CEO doesn't need to know how to do the employees' jobs. CEO needs to know how to manage people and a business, strategic planning etc.

It's not like there's been a cop appointed to the position since George Fivaz (I think).

I think you're confusing the roles of the Police Commissioner and the Minister of Police :)

Anyway my example was only meant to serve as an analogy.
